Nick took the car back to his workshop and got it up on 4 wheels.
Then he delivered it back to my house where it could be stored.
At that time I didn't have funds/time/inclination to proceed but I could take time to appriase the situation and check the history of the car.

The photos of the car outside Nick's workshop illustrate some of the body modifications it had acquired over the years. The fibreglass bumpers have already been discarded.

It would appear that the body kit was fitted in the mid nineties.
It comprised flared arches front & rear, bi-plane spoiler, extended sills, huge deep dam bumpers both ends, modern mirrors, etc.

I can find no receipt for that work but I discovered an invoice for the aftermarket wide wheels and tyres (that filled those super wide arches) which were obviously fitted at the same time. That is dated February 1995. I don’t think the look proved very successful. The guy I bought the car from had purchased the car a year or so after the conversion (not with the aim of returning the car to standard but – as was common back then – attempting to build an RS replica).

From what I can further determine - from receipts and mileage – I’d say the car was taken off the road and readied for the rebuild (that didn’t happen) at the end of 1997. Very little work was done and it laid in storage for a long time. I purchased the car 10 years later in December 2007.
Yep, I’ve had it stored for another 5 years.

Blimey, this is like waiting for a bus.. you hang around for ages, miss it when it arrives and are left running along behind trying to keep up!

Lime? I'm not sure of the merits of owning a bright green car but if it's what you really want

But loving all this detail... and the fast moving pace, twists and turns; it's like you've been waiting to get out on the 'Ring and are now going for sub 8 mins... you're the Walter Rohrl of resto threads!

BTW, at this point did you not consider saving yourself a lot of bother and flipping it? You could've slapped some red paint on it and sold it to Vic, Slope II

Yes Nigel, there is a look of the slope about it in those pics.
And I did see some NOS slope wings on eBay the other day.

However -whilst I'm not averse to painting it the wrong colour - I draw the line at fitting slope nose wings on it.

You can see in the picture below the detail in front of the rear arches. Visible is what looks to be an air intake sculpted into the base of the rear arch. It’s carefully fashioned in steel so someone went to a lot of effort to fabricate a dreadful looking detail.
Easy to access the torsion bars though.

I reckon I can date those photos based on the two RSR reps in the background.

And it's at least two years ago.

My guess is that the Carrera is now finished and this thread will be over in a week.

Sadly the Carrera is far from finished. In fact I've not even ordered the paint yet.
So Nick might not take too kindly to the expectation that it will be ready within the week, let's not put the lad under too much pressure...

We'll be on to more recent photos soon though.

Here's some shots of the shell as discovered.
Nick popped the car up on the ramps and attempted to find some corrosion....



This shot shows the floor edges from underneath.

Plenty of evidence of old MoT 'patch' welding.

A little bit of good news to temper the bad. This is under the rear shelf and looks to be rust-free.

A shot of the engine bay which clearly shows evidence of the original silver paint.
Ironically for most of it's life (and as documented by the DVLA) the car was black.

You can also see a glimpse of the aluminium trailing arms.
The seats pans are refreshingly rot free.
