Hi Barry,

I understand it is/was that press in the picture. When asked "how on earth did you make those" I was shown this new tool which "was knocked up"

So not sure on the applied engineering to finish sorry

Thanks Garry, I've got a very similar flypress, so interesting to see what they do with theirs.

Things have slowed down somewhat at Chesterton as an urgent project has delayed the finishing of my shell. This isn’t a problem as I’m trying to keep the final bodywork build in budget, but I’m assured completion will be the end of October 600hrs later. Yes I did say 600 hrs! (It was in a bad way if you look back)

To keep busy I’ve been working on all the ancillary parts required for the final assembly from seats to engine (again waiting on machine work) to nuts and bolts. This coupled with trying to source some of the rarer parts fitted to a SWB “S” has been a challenge especially in the back pocket.

One thing I’ve been working on in detail is the original “special order green” colour of the car. Various conversations with the factory and Reading haven’t been much help so I’m down to colour matching from a piece cut from the car (pictured). The light plays a few tricks in the photo’s but match 1 is getting close.

More soon hopefully

Garry

Garry,

Absolutely excellent thread - much appreciated. If the condition of my car meant the same level of restoration was required I don't think I would have the heart to visit Chestertons until it was finished!

BTW who will be doing the paintwork? - Do remember to keep hold of the paint formulation, easily forgotten about once the car is complete and a real pain to replicate if the paint has been tinted in any way.

Great job, looking forward to seeing more.
Cheers,
Darren

Garry,

Some time since I last posted. You are doing very well, those carbs look very nice. I knew from my brothers swb 911 they rusted somewhat but actually never realised they were as bad as the 356. They are doing some really nice fabrication and welding. You have to be brave to start doing the job properly but the return will be worth it.

Well done indeed.

Roy

Progress meeting today at Chesterton coachworks revealed more than I hoped for

Roof section is now completed along with rear wings, doors, bumpers, cabin, parcel shelf, tunnel etc. Home straight here we come! :bounce: Onto a rotisserie for final spot welding to the underneath on Friday with another week finalizing small detail.

Fingers crossed three more weeks then off to the painters

The closing of the bodywork chapter is approaching fast with final alignment and fettling taking place next week. The body is now on a rotisserie and I have to say the attention to detail applied by John Williams and his team at Chesterton Coachworks is unsurpassable.

Two of pictures below show the beginnings of lead filling various joints as per the factory, which again was fascinating to watch.

I'd like to know more of what the factory had to say; and also who said it. It is disappointing that the factory did not keep better records, but it was a different world 45 years ago.
Could you also PM me with the engine serial, and the part #'s and serial#s from the Weber's, please. Another little project I've been asked to assist in.
Looking very good, I must commend you on undertaking the project. Dave

Very nice work Garry, you must be pleased. I see they have even fabricated the correct early profile of the offside B post (a point mentioned by John M in his restoration thread). I would draw your attention to one small thing while the car is in it's current state. The pictures are not conclusive so I can't be 100% but it does look as though they have missed installing the rear screen demist tubes. Can you confirm if they are there? The pics are in shadow at this point.

Regards
Mike

Hi Mike,

I’m pleased as punch with the outcome so far.

Do you mean the holes in the rear parcel shelf? If I’m missing something thanks, but as you say now’s the time.

Been drawing on various sources this weekend (thanks Mick) trying to locate the exact position for the rear ARB brackets, it’s no fun being under a 912 in the dark with a steel rule. So while I’m on the help string has anyone got some details pictures of both brackets which hold the pedal boards in position (the ones on the floor). That’s before I start ripping the carpets up again in the dark of the technical reference car. :?
