Thank you!

That is in fact a poor diagram because although the one end is meant to be the clutch it sure looks like the diameter of the fan!

This issue must be something silly.

The engine is tight as a duck's thingy, there are sparks that rival my arc welder, and the stink of petrol suggests fuel.
It works on 4 pots, and the same 4 pots every time, so the 3 elements are arriving at the wrong time.
If the RH cam was out #6 would not be running right.
The flames suggest unburnt fuel, so the spark is arriving at the wrong time.

Will try again tonight. :cherry:

Happy to report it is on 6 cylinders!

Didn't start the evening that way mind.
Put the RH carb back together, ran on 4.
Changed the leads over on #4 and #5 ran on 4.

Took the inlet rocker covers off and went through the cam timing by checking the inlet rockers were 4 thou clear at their respective TDC, all were.

Took a look at the distributor......

Reset the rotor arm to match the dist mark @ #1 TDC. Would not dream of starting, expected 'strain' to turn over.
Checked the points (hands up who remembers points?) to find them at 8 thou!
Opened them to 15 thou, set the dist back to Bob Watson marks.

Turned it over, and met with a full 6 pots running, nearly puring!

Time now for balancing and mixture setting all DIY.

Will then consider taking it to bob's for running in on the rollers.

BLOODY HELL! :drunken: :drunken: :drunken: :bounce: :)

Special getting closer...

Post by DanG »

Graham, thank you.

Your (pretty much) unerring dedication to both your cars and their engines has been a source of both inspiration and valuable technical advice.

I will add this to the check list when I get mine back together and about to start!

Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement.
It is really frustrating at times when something so simple is so illusive!

It must have been tight points and dist position, but it should now dial in and be ready for 2013 season by end of November.
I still have my 911's gearbox to do......
But I'll leave the grand 3.2 in it well alone (!)

Graham, thought you'd like this....mine runs too...one five cylinders...one stone cold but 150 psi comp, stinks of fuel and both plugs wet...better check the points.... me thinks they are the only common denominator. I'let you know ;-}

I think you could both have worn dissys with movement on the shafts! have them out and check rebuild if required.

Bit of a shock seeing this thread suddenly at the top of the page!

My Lola engine runs now on all 6. It was all down to timing and gap size. 6 thou gap is just TOO small!
I've rebalanced the carbs roughly and there is more to come from them as they pop a bit every now and then, but ok for now.

Thanks for the thought Berny, and of course, you could still be right!

I hope to run the engine on carbs/dizzy until June then over to ITB/ECU so the carbs/dist etc will be redundant.

All assuming I still have the car, or it is still in one piece.... :blackeye:

Ran the Lola at Prescott hillclimb today as practice for race tomorrow.

It worked!

First time in the car since the engine went bang last June.

On all 6 cylinders, told it sounds like a Porsche, and ran cleanly.

Gears all worked well and the taller diff Mike has fitted is nice, and takes the ratios out a further 10%.
Forgot what 400 or so bhp/ton felt like.

Need to get back into the seat and grow some confidence asap.
Good to see Jason there (2.4S Targa) and still buzzing about Mike's RSR launch (aren't we all who went?)

Just back from Prescott, car back in the garage and a cool glass of Kir has arrived!

The day was great.

Practice gave me a 52 sec run with everything working(still!)
First race run was a 50 sec
Second race run was a pb in this car @ 49.96

Mrs Hillclimber reminded me I've cut this hill in my Impreza in 46 not 47, so a long way to go yet!

The Lola ran fab, I was comfortable and the gears all worked.

With the new taller diff 3rd is an awesome gear (as it is on a road 911), and I almost could not wait to get into third, but the shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 2nd etc was as sweet as it could be.

3rd gear, 3500 on tap, and the pedal to the metal, what a din the engine makes from where I was sitting.

Just a joy to drive.

Chuffed.

Shelsley is next week and the chance to pull 4th.

Nice to meet 964RS today and some other DDK'ers :)
