Yes, sorry about that, family and work have swallowed me whole! Haven't had much time for fun at all!

I'm loving the Viper Green, its growing on me, it might even be the new Bluto! (sorry Vic... ) but no sunroof, got to have me sunroof.

Last year I was looking at an RS. A genuine car but not ‘original.’ In fact it was a non-matching numbers car. Much of the history was rather vague – Swiss LHD, rumours of sprints in the 70’s…talk of race history in UK…talk of accidents. And for sale at a non 911 specialist. It couldn’t have been more obvious if someone had installed WALK AWAY in neon above my bed as I lay there wondering what to do next. I bought it.

And since then I have met people who have owned my car, people who have worked on the car, and people who have raced it. I have met the guy who imported it from Switzerland in ‘85 and my search has spread to Canada from where I received (after much sensitive discussion) 5 ring-binders’ worth of info about my car’s racing history. Every race it entered, every practice time sheet, scrutineering pass, race result, period press article and race programme, as well as dozens of photos of the car in action. Everything is there, including details of when it was converted from Touring to race lightweight spec (shown on a race scrutineering form), when the engine/box were taken out and why (a front corner accident at Brands Hatch).

That has led me to the door of Neil Bainbridge, who owned and ran the car in ‘87-’90. It has been quoted many times that Neil has forgotten more about RS’s than most of us will ever know and when you get to know him (as I have), you realise exactly why he has this reputation. And you know what? He did indeed remove my car’s original engine and box in ‘89 after the accident to continue racing the season and he still has it. Or rather he did. Because now I do.

There are a few gaps in my history (still trying to find the original Swiss Owner – if anyone can help!) but I have time.

So don’t let a search for ‘perfection’ end up with you never living your dream because you never know how it might turn out…

Now you can thrash it within an inch of its life and know even if you put it into a barrier it will probably be worth a hell of a lot more now! Cool

Which is your car - there is a lovely white/blue Lightweight there - is that yours? How was mine looking? In a thousand pieces I'll bet! I decided to get a complete engine and gearbox rebuild done over the winter but I'm really missing it now. And frankly if Neil could just stop knocking bits off himself it would help...he already takes twice as long as everyone else!! (in joke there)

I did worry about stuffing the car into the armco...it became clear that the cost to repair the RS if I did was likely to be more than the cost of actually buying another car - and with my driving it was a distinct possibility. So that's what I did - and here they are together at Combe - the RS and the RS looky likey (with a 74 2.7 engine in it).


Now I can trackday and get some signatures on my race licence without quite as much fear and still have an utterly brilliant RS for...er..showing off

And as I said in my original post...I bought the car because I fell in love with it - even with all its faults and issues. I never knew that some detective work (part of the fun of owning an old car) would yield so much.

The potential uplift in value (but these days, frankly who knows!) is nice but sort of irrelevant as I hope never to have to sell it. That said, I have taken a slightly sick pleasure in letting the original dealer know what a bit of extra effort could have done to his profit on the deal. Sorry to any dealers out there...!

If there was an unbelievable RS in white, I'd probably look, but really I'm looking for standout colours like Orange, Lemon yellow, black and the like.
