As Nick will know its pretty unlikely to have an original oil tank with that yellow filler cap ; without being picky theres plenty more not original even in the piccies !

I wish I could find the full story to this cars motor, but nobody seems to know, or is telling...

I think we reported on this car after Essen. We spoke to the owner who said the case was replaced as it was beyond use. I assumed it was distorted.

It upsets me because this is my perfect recipe for an RS what with the colour and everything. But if it isn't original like it appears not to be, then a first 500 car is a mish-mash, shame.

Last year I was looking at an RS. A genuine car but not ‘original.’ In fact it was a non-matching numbers car. Much of the history was rather vague – Swiss LHD, rumours of sprints in the 70’s…talk of race history in UK…talk of accidents. And for sale at a non 911 specialist. It couldn’t have been more obvious if someone had installed WALK AWAY in neon above my bed as I lay there wondering what to do next. I bought it.

And since then I have met people who have owned my car, people who have worked on the car, and people who have raced it. I have met the guy who imported it from Switzerland in ‘85 and my search has spread to Canada from where I received (after much sensitive discussion) 5 ring-binders’ worth of info about my car’s racing history. Every race it entered, every practice time sheet, scrutineering pass, race result, period press article and race programme, as well as dozens of photos of the car in action. Everything is there, including details of when it was converted from Touring to race lightweight spec (shown on a race scrutineering form), when the engine/box were taken out and why (a front corner accident at Brands Hatch).

That has led me to the door of Neil Bainbridge, who owned and ran the car in ‘87-’90. It has been quoted many times that Neil has forgotten more about RS’s than most of us will ever know and when you get to know him (as I have), you realise exactly why he has this reputation. And you know what? He did indeed remove my car’s original engine and box in ‘89 after the accident to continue racing the season and he still has it. Or rather he did. Because now I do.

There are a few gaps in my history (still trying to find the original Swiss Owner – if anyone can help!) but I have time.

So don’t let a search for ‘perfection’ end up with you never living your dream because you never know how it might turn out…

I'm sure a lot of us can relate to that perfectly. My car isn't perfect, very good but not perfect and I wouldn't have it any other way. Maybe working would be nice but that's another story

What a great first post Ant, and a really excellent story too. Much better than the Porsche mags advertorial type articles with a 'for sale' note at the end, couldn't it be an article?

Bloody hell Whizzo s even older than me and much quicker .........................took me round Silverstone in a well known genuine 2.7 rs lighteweight , was unbelieveable speed , we all know abt his natural car control......................................only told me after it had a 3.4 lump init !Was sure if i felt better or worse when i knew ............

All modded up with 2.8 cams etc , looks lightweight but is touring........early chassis though ..................i rahter like it , except for the wheel centers!
