Always a nice feeling when the car meets/exceeds your expectations ...

Well, that was a scare... Started to have a good look round the car, mug of coffee in hand, making mental list of things to do and things to buy. Got my endoscope camera out and took a look round the suspension console on the passenger side - all looks solid, with nothing but a little surface rust which I'll treat. OK, lets' take a good look at the hell hole in the engine bay. It looked good in the photos and the original ad had mentioned about it being cleaned up and treated with POR15. So why did I discover the area appeared to have been covered in sticky tape and painted over!!!!

Fearing the worst (although I was preparing myself for hell hole repair since buying the car), I took a scalpel and poked through the 'tape' – it struck solid metal underneath. Courage in both hands, cut and ripped off the 'tape' to discover that it was in fact a black waterproof coat that had been applied over the area, and which had shrunk and lifted. Pulled it all way to discover rock solid metalwork which had been wirebrushed and rust treated! Can only assume a previous owner had applied a coat of something to prevent any future rust problems. It is absolutely fine and just needs a coat of something more modern in the rustproofing dept, and then some orange slapped over the top. Missed a bullet there, methinks.

Absolutely missed a bullet there Keith. Speaking from my limited experience it's a pig of a job to repair properly and the damage is rarely just skin deep. Mine is now covered in plenty of epoxy primer, seam sealer and many layers of paint!

Ship docks Saturday, container due to be unloaded on or by Wednesday, so will probably collect the car on Friday 22nd. (Shipping paid for – £1168 all in, comprising £698 shipping plus £470 UK destination handling – ie, decontainerising etc.

Kingstown is just so easy to deal with. This is my sixth or seventh 'Atlantic crossing' handled by them and I wouldn't use anybody else.

Great to read Keith....such a relief that the car arrives as it was sold...my E Type was always a wild gamble in some ways so I know how you feel...the pleasure .....when it actually is as you wanted ...is a great feeling

Strictly speaking no, but... The 'but' is that if you choose to register it without getting it MOT'd, the DVLA can, and almost certainly will, ask to have the vehicle inspected, principally to prove its existence. The normal waiting time for an appointment (they come to you) is around two weeks, sometimes longer. Then, it takes a day or two for the DVLA to be informed and then 10 days to a fortnight for the registration process to go through. If you have the car MOT'd, you send off the printout along with the rest of the paperwork and cut out two weeks sitting waiting for your car to be inspected.

Incidentally, this is carried out by SGS, the independent group which also carries out IVA inspections. Although the post-import/pre-registration inspection is only to check if the car is what it says on the application form in terms of chassis number etc, it is likely that the same inspection can be used to determine if the car is a VHI (vehicle of historic interest) or not.

So, bottom line, importing a vehicle? Get it MOT'd and speed up the registration process.
