Its been a while so a few more details to bring me more up to date

these images bring events up to the "engine in" status (big thanks to Barry.....again......) which was then the subject of my "engine will only idle" thread

thankfully I can now report that the engine is just fine and that the problem was a rogue wire, amazing after all the checks on pressure and timing

which now leaves me generally fitting the interior, plus rear bumpers and number plate panels, various gaskets and all manner of odds and sods

have done the headlining, took days, but on purpose, as its not worth rushing….. not bad if I say so myself

new windscreen is being fitted Tuesday and also the rear screen (thanks Stu), new rear seat belts arrive tomorrow from Quckfit belts, so August deadline is not too difficult…….

We’ll see

first off are gratuitous photos of the SSI exchangers and new muffler from Dansk...gorgeous

as these were so lovely it seemed a pity not to clean the whole engine and gearbox, so hours of time, various toothbrushes, rags, WD-40, thiners, rotary brush attachments the odd bit of powder coating.....and plenty of elbow grease later......

Image

Image

Image

first outing was just pushing it onto the drive to turn her around prior to getting the engine ready for instalation

Image

geting the engine of the hoist was a bit of a laugh, I'm sure there must be other ways but this was our method....

Image

once on the ground it was fairly easy to manouever

before it finally found its new home

lastly, I've made one or two amendments to things in the re-build, one of which is the route of the wiring loom
the standard route is such a mess and a fantastic dirt trap I diverted the cables back into the car after they exit the transmision tunel and ran then under the rear seat carpet area, they exit in the normal place but avoid being exposed for most of their length....

hi all

been a while, as I am reminded by just looking at these pictures, but after a bit of a push over the last 2 months the car has now got its MOT !!

not absolutely finished, as there are a few details to do, but they are pretty small

took the car to GT ONE in Chertsey for the suspension setting up last week, which was the first time I drove it on the roads, awfull first drive and pretty nerve wracking, as every small noise was a worry and cause for panic

MOT took 2 attempts as the front lights were not up to scratch, so I took the indicator stalks off and with a good clean all was well....I also fitted a relay kit from a guy called Marcus Sucro (msucro@rennlist.com) which upped the brighteness of the headlamps and is well recomended

had a drive again this morning, much better this time, especially as I managed to fix the damn bonnet lock which was popping open until then

car is misfiring around 3000rpm, which I think is because of play in the lower part of the spindle of the distributer assembley. We noticed play in this spindle when Barry and I set up the timing so perhaps that is it....not sure if these things can be repaired or if its a new one scenario ????

I'll post some pictures in a week or so

Jonathan - if you end up needing a replacement distributor, I have an 'as new' one available.

so finally at last she is finished, although as we all know there’s no such thing as finished as there’s always the final touches and then years of tweaking… 8)

this small badge was the very reson for the whole project.....

just picking up from the last images, these 2 show the self adhesive door protection film and the new floorpan acoustic panels, also the rear shelf before the belts went in

Image

Image

First thing was I bought the distributor from Andy which Barry fitted and also set the timing properly for the car, the transformation was immediate, now I had a monster on my hands

At this stage I had not installed the rear seat belts so the rear trim and acoustic padding was missing, so the journey down to Barry’s was a very noisy affair akin to having a couple of tigers having a scrap in the back of the car

That journey also made me realise that the suspension settings were too low, grounded out on the rear floor pan and a couple of weeks later once I had installed the belts and trim we all 4 went out which resulted in grounding out on the fuel tank and the protection plate under the front cross member

So last week she went back to GT One and was raised about an inch at the rear

Running on 225/50’s and 205/50’s she sits about 24 inches at the rear and 24.5 or so at the front

also being the anorak I am...... 8) I also had to modify the whel caps available, as for my year of car, the 7J and 8J wheels have different centre diameters and so I have to buy the awfull caps with holes in.....no way....so I bought a locking kit from Type 911 and set about modifying an early set with the 3 prongs. Not that dificuilt as you just trim the spring clips to pop the locking ring over them, then lock the ring against the bent tabs (I used stainless washers and superglue) then you can insert caps and tighten grub screws...cool

Pictures generally speak for themselves, last weekend was pretty god on the Saturday so I took these

note the custom made box to cover the rear belts;

I had a piece about 150mm x 400mm of 3mm steel cut which I have painted and bolted under and through the rear shelf to reinforce the belts. I elected to put the belts in the middle of the car to give greater clearance under the rear scren (same layout as my 3 series BMW), which works well for the children too

Image

I still have to install the chrome cill pieces and the odd decal badge but after almost 3 years part 1 of the relationship is now over

:) :)

Looks Great. I must get my finger out and get mine finished !!
How about some "older" plates for it ? Perhaps something with a 911 in the number !! I know you are not allowed to make them appear younger, but we aren't trying to do that are we !!
Cheers JP for another kick ! Not like I got a few of them at the midlands Christmash bash!!

looks superb 8)

As Tim says, why not find a cheap L-plate & stick that on for the more authentic '73 RS look :) + you could run black & silver plates before & after the annual MOT ;)

So, now you've completed the car to this stage you'll be looking to sell it & start on a new project ?....

Looks great - how about a side-on shot ?
