I have a question for any owners of Lightweights that there may be listening here.

What are they like for driving distances? E.G. Say to Le Mans or further afield? Are those sports seats comfortable enough for distance, and does the lack of sound damping become an earful?

I realise that's why the Touring exists, but just wondered if anybody had Lightweighted across Europe?

I haven't driven mine across Europe, but I've done plenty of trips across the UK and the 'lwt' (Sport) is delightful.

Obviously the seat comfort can depend on your build, but once strapped in with a harness, the support and comfort are excellent and there is plenty of adjustment to get a near perfect driving position (lhd is much better than rhd). Only 5th is a slight reach on the 915.

Noise isn't an issue, its a pleasure, and most 'lwts' don't have a radio. And you can cruise at 100, with the driver's window wide open with no buffeting, just a nice breeze.

Ride, handling and stability on 7s & 8s, with the correct profile tyres (IMO GY NCT5's are the best) are beatutifully fluid and compliant.

I have been watching this thread with interest for a while now and I thought I would post a few pics of my RS. The car is downunder in the colonies (New Zealand not Australia) and I have owned it for 20 years. I have just completed a 4 year restoration and still have dozens of minor issues to attend to such as electrical gremlins and only getting 1/3 throttle.
This RS is an ex UK new car #0073, the third RHD made.

I saw some talk earlier about the HK car for sale at Classic Throttle in Australia. This car sold not too long ago for $300 AUD and within a year was back on the market at $499 AUD.

Nice to see your car. It looks superb and you look to live in a beautiful part of the World too. That's quite a collection of cars you have. It would be nice to see pics of the others as well, especially on those great roads I believe you have over there.

Yes, 0073 was the third RHD car and interestingly the first, 0061, was also white/green, but I suspect you already knew that. The first five RHD cars were all white but it took a while to get to a white/red combination (0361). I think the white/green is a very crisp colour combination on the RS shape. Nice to see you have owned for many years. Did you restore yourself? How many other RS's are there in NZ?

Post up any niggles you have in more detail. I am sure you will get good advice from this forum.

4 years? Mine's been off the road for just 3 months and that's frustrating enough! Any major unpleasant surprises during rebuild? Car's looking very handsome, I bet the local roads are a bit more fun than around London...

Sure I've seen on the 'S's that #0495 is also in NZ - another right hooker and close to my own #0496

There are 3 RS's in New Zealand, 0073, 0920 both RHD and 1543 which is a light green LHD unmolested car.

#0495 is in Australia I believe.

The restoration was managed by myself but the metalwork, painting and most of the reassembly was done by others. I did the engine rebuild myself. Nasty surprises were many and varied but the worst was the window frame anodising. That was an expensive nightmare and is still not right and will all have to come out and be done again at some stage. Another frustration was parts supply. Ordering left and right parts and having just one side arrive and the otehr on back order caused major delays.

Another seriously frustrating delay was caused by the fragile magnesium case. We finally got on top of that but it took a year.

The car was completed on Saturday the 9th of Feb this year and won the major intermarque concours in NZ on the following day.

Last Saturday the Porsche Club wanted it to display at the annual dinner held at a local Porsche dealership. The 7km drive to and from was the longest drive in it for 7 years. (3 years off the road waiting for the $$$ and 4 years restoring) I won't be driving it until all the gremlins are sorted.

Here a few pics of the other cars as requested. The 356 Carrera and 1950 Cab are projects, the Carrera nearly complete and the Cab a very long way off.

I certainly agree with Mike's comments, the Viper Green on GP White is a great looking combination and one that is not often seen. Thanks for sharing the photos of your recently completed RS. It looks fantastic.

The RS I have has an interesting NZ connection. Here is an older thread on the Early S board that has some details of it's time spent in your country. One of the other RS owners in NZ, Ian K., provided valuable history and connected me with the second owner, who imported the car from Switzerland.

I have been reading as many threads as possible, though I haven't been able to type as much as I'd wish, mainly because I haven't had the time to reply.
I don't know how much I should say here, but basically I'm having to re-write a previously completed and done-and-dusted ready for press novel, because a competitor (fellow writer ) has got to press already with a very similar thread idea. Unexpected, but it happens, but cue headless chicken acts from agents, editors and publishers....
So, my much-vaunted 'do-it-all-in 2008' freedom has disappeared into the mist.....until Autumn, and this isn't a 'flexy' deadine, this is a must-do.

Which means that I can't commit to CLM or going to see cars, or arranging for people to go see them.......ad bleedin' nauseam... So that's that, for now anyway. However, I will have it sorted as soon as typingly possible.

Back to the cars: Thanks for the great RS addition from NZ, what a fabulous looking car! I even loved the 930 Turbo in the pics!

Again Steve, it isn't me that has bought the MPP Gulf Blue car, sorry chap, neither will I be at Hedingham, this year! But you have hit the nail on the proverbial with your 'dream car' quote.

Since I started this thread back in January I have gained a vast amount of knowledge about RS's (well vaster than before, whatever that vastness may have been, or not...) from the contributors, via PM, via e-mail, via phone calls et al. I have been told all sorts of stuff, which I know that the people who have told me wouldn't me to say on this thread. Which means that I have moved from Mr Iconoclast to Mr Circumspect, even, and it hurts to say this, Mr respect-the-status-quo (a little bit, all over the world!). Hence not as many 'guess-what-I-know-now posts'.

Still love the RS more than anything else though, but I want a perfect one, I want one like '0496.'
Which leads me nicely into a confession of sorts, I feel that I can say this now, because PMJT has left a couple of nice 'bring-ins' for me to broach this.

'0496' is the one-that-got-away. I was the person that PMJT alluded to when he said that he 'nearly sold it' earlier this year. We had a long conversation via e-mail and mobys that was 'tentatively' leading-up to me acquiring this fabulous car. James(C) brokered the 'deal', but we had to keep it quiet. Fair -do's, I kept to that, and just mentioned a 'phantom' car that was in the background, well Phil's RS was it.

A few of you guessed the car with no other references! Well done! You know who you are, and thanks for not broaching that confidence.

So, at the same time as looking at other RS's, my heart was set on '0496'. I had to have that car. (You have to admit Phil, I did say from the start that you should be back on here )
Well, it's history now, Phil got out in the car and that was that, the pale doubts of Winter blossomed into a renewed love in Spring....hey-ho.

Am I bitter? No way Phil has been a great pal, and has shared stuff with me that I really appreciate, and is also very entertaining on the dog-and-bone. The very reason he wants to keep her is the same reason that I wanted to buy her so much, she's amazing!

There you have it then, that is my benchmark, '0496'. I have juggled just about every option of, restoring, repping, ad infinitum, but in the end, it's got to be right. No, I'm not a 'museum-curator' (that made me chuckle Gordon ) and I will drive the nuts off the perfect car, that's just me, that's what it was made for.....

BTW Am closely watching REH for more info and pics on the yellow RST, Russell's given me a price, but no pics as yet, or further info.......hmmm!

Am also waiting for the 'credit-crunch' to hit 911 prices....... Am not holding breath.

You were rock-solid right about REH and the Tangerine car mate, he got exactly what he wanted....and more, allegedly....
Despite plentiful badgering, he just chuckled and would not move (on price), you have to admire the chutzpah of the man!
