We have decided to take 356's to Snetterton AMOC/VSCC Festival at end of September.

Snetterton is 40mins from me. I'll look at dates and try and pop along

Rolling road session today. 148hp but leaned out at top end. Main jets drilled out and delivered 176hp at 7,300rpm, with 170hp from 6,000. 176 from 1,588cc = 110hp per litre. Ian reckons there's more to come with a bit more head work... I told him he should think about building race motors for a living :)

Wow Steve - or should I say Ian - that is super impressive! 110hp per litre from a pushrod is going some. 176hp would be a decent result from a 2L 901 engine!

170hp @ 6000 is very impressive

Yes I think Ian was satisfied (well as satisfied as an engine builder can be until the next strip down and rebuild this winter)!

Bruce, the JPM cam developed to Ian's specifications is probably a large contributor to the 170hp at 6,000 although Ian reckons we could get another 25hp with head work and a more radical cam, which at the moment is pretty mild. We're constrained with the current lift available because of the cam being so close to the crank which is a common complaint on these engines. We could've solved this with a bespoke crank and new rods but the Scat Super Lite is such good value for money and a replacement set of shorter Carrillos wasn't in the budget this year. Arrow quoted £5,000 and I just couldn't bring myself to spend that sort of money when a Scat was less than half that, just as reliable and will cope with as many revs as a pushrod motor will turn.

It will be fascinating to see what Ian can get from this motor over the coming years as we develop it. Similar VW engines he builds are getting 265hp from 1,800cc at 11,000rpm if my memory serves me correct on the exact numbers but I'll let him provide specifics. All I know is there's more to come.

BTW a huge thank you to John Ruston for the referral on the rolling road and offers of advice - all given freely and without a moments hesitation. Thanks John

Should have gone to Mr Baldwins last year when I told Ian to

With your bhp numbers you're hitting 149ftlbs at 6k and dropping back to 127ftlbs at 7.3k. I'd guess Ian would be looking to carry the 150ish figure higher in the rev range with a wilder cam. If he succeeded, you'd maybe hit 200bhp (circa 7k@149ftlbs). Awesome :)
I'd guess the 265bhp engine is a drag motor with no fan? (127ftlbs@11k)
