Wow, thats one hell of a shopping list Paul, it must feel like xmas has come early.

I'd love to know what that pile of panels cost you. Your OPC must have you top of their christmas card list!

It's going to be amazing. I am in awe of you - and anyone else with the cajones to do this - it makes no financial sense whatsoever yet you still do it, despite the uncertain economnic conditions. I haven't got the stomach for that nor the ability to let my heart overcome rationality, which is a sad way to live!

That said, I bumped into a friend of mine yesterday with 2 pagodas, a 300 roadster, a 3.5 coupe AND convertible (both RHD w108s - ~240 & 80 made respectively) and he tells me he's added 3 356s to his collection... one the Carrera2 from Roger Bray. His pockets are clearly deeper than mine (and mine are deeper than many!)

I've tallied it up and it's a bit less than £12k.
That includes VAT. It also includes the pair of front wings which were secondhand but excellent (actually off a '74 Carrera targa that was scrapped).
Everything is genuine Porsche.
Within that shopping list were other items I'd not previously mentioned, like roll bar brackets, cable guides, torsion bar covers, cant rails, outer sills, etc.

Then you need to add a bit for labour....

The two pricey panels were the complete floor and the roof.
Each of those was about £1,250.

But the wooden crates are free.....

12K - it all begins to make sense.
You have the best possible panels that have factory rustproofing and putting them all together must be easier and cheaper than trying to mend the old ones.
It sounds a lot more sensible than I first thought and it will be a fabulous Carrera when it is finished and you won't have any nagging doubts about any remaining rust in repaired panels as you won't have any.

That's actually less than I expected. Did you manage to swing some discount as a batch order?

Yeah, less than I expected so I went back over the scribbled notes. I missed the roof, so the final total is more like just over £13k.
I try not to go back and add up my receipts, it drains the colour from my face....

£13k for all those parts seems pretty cheap to me to be honest. I was expecting a LOT more.

Try buying two 964RSR rear wings and see if you have any change out of £5k!!

TBH I am surprised, as I had expected a much larger bill, and with genuine panels the body will be as good as or better than new.

Funnily enough my Alfa Sprint GT resto has a similar story (but much cheaper ) as the rear end 'looked OK' but closer inspection and subsequent measuring has meant I have purchased two complete rear quarter panels, a rear panel and boot floor - i.e. a complete new rear end from screen back. Cheaper and easier than repairing what was there, and I will have a rust free Alfa - cannot say that about many of them.

Awaiting gearbox news, and what was the state of the interior panels etc........an impatient lot aren't we.

Yeah, but don't forget, you can buy all the panels for a brand new VW Polo for that sort of money.
And they even weld them together and paint them for you.
And install the engine & gearbox. You even get wheels & tyres and seats & trim. And everything else....

I guess we have learned over the past few restoration threads (or at least this one and Dan's) that any old 911 (and some newer ones) will have rust issues, and deeper than you think. So in future, anyone looking to buy a top end car will favour one where this type of evidence is available of the work done and the true state of the car. So just a few works to encourage the continued investment, even if Mrs Ferryman could have bought a small holiday hideaway instead with the money

£13K for the sheet steel.
Another £10 for the labour to carefully get the best shell from the repairs.
£8K (?) for the paint it warrants as that is what the initial judgement will be based on.

Then the engine/box and suspension, the interior then!

£2K for the bits missed..

Quite alarming, so best not to keep too refined a log of costs, just stuff the receipts in a folder as they land.

Look forward to the sheet metal part of this car.
Suspect it will be nice when done.

£10 for the labour? It might be little bit more than that

Although, I suspect not as much as you thought, depending on how much back dating those panels need.

Not for the purists but some interesting numbers and inspiration to finish the project!
