Nige, it's one possibility we considered along with a very generous offer to restore the car as a charitable status, another involving a 'share' issue with a board of restoration directors.

Yoda, it will be a good bit more expensive if returned to lhd, not so much if retained as rhd. It will depend if someone sees the car as a factory lhd prototype or if the subsequent conversion and installation of all those rare rhs cross- over parts ( dash top, heater control, lower dash, etc etc) are more important and part of the cars history.

Personally , if I was going to restore it for myself, I think LHD prototype would be my choice for a resto ... how it left the factory is IMHO where the full value will be for any potential purchasers around the world.

DDK resto ... IMHO, isn't going to work .. especailly when we get to the part when we decide wether it's to be fitted with ST, RS or RSR wings & wether the cage should be colour coded to the body ( only joking Nick )

What about if some of the UK Porsche restoration/Specialists companies get behind it. Offer their labour for free and the finished article is auctioned with the proceeds to MacMillan?

The specialists will get their time back by the coverage in magazines etc and being associated with such a project.

I really do think we have explored every possibility (apart from cutting it up for parts) and I agree it was a romantic idea to make it a DDK display car in some way. However we discussed it, and believed you me Brendan and I have discussed it over and over, we concluded that we have really enjoyed,

The discovery
The research
The digging for history
Tracing previous owners
The 'numbers' research
The Versuch investigation etc etc

And maybe it's time for someone to take on the mantle of restoration. We had so hoped this would be someone as interested in the story as we have been rather than a commercial resto but the main things that this car is saved by someone who will do the rebuild justice and perhaps enjoy it afterwards as a driving road car which is what it was originally. I don't think this would have been so worthwhile had the car not been so complete and original (in the main). Brendan and I are not restorers and a bit of love and attention to detail is what is needed in the rebuild and perhaps even documentation of the rebuild (again something we wanted to share on DDK- some of the recent restoration threads have been truly inspirational and very informative).

We have talked and talked about it for months.........

Certainly enough of a great story there for a good magazine article, I'm surprised there hasn't been any contact made regarding that. If that did happen, I think it would place you guys in a nice position within the cars history and in a good place to sell it afterwards to a like minded restorer or owner.

If it wasn't for you guys finding it what would have happened to it? I think your work is done.

Thanks for explaining. I had thought the attraction of the car was in retaining all the cross over parts and RHD conversion so I hadn't even thought about putting it back to LHD. It is a development car and for me, the changes would be very interesting.

You are probably right that it needs a sympathetic home and someone who can restore it well and retain the nice details. I also think the car should be used once done, would be a shame if it ended up in someone's collection and hidden from the public.

As the listing says we would love this 911 to be bought and restored by an enthusiast who understands its position in Porsche history. Of course we would be very happy if that was also another DDK’er.

The story up to now was a great one and I'm sure you have both had a lot of fun and excitement getting to this point. I'll never forget Mike always going on about finding something rare and special in a barn. Who'd have thought he ever would with Brendan and it would be in Scotland! Amazing. The best Englishman, Irishman, Scotsman story ever

Think it will fetch good money as it is and you both deserve it, will help with both your psychiatric bills.
