Back in a Porsche, buying my 993

I have a friend over here currently looking for a 993 and have sent him this and Ferry Man's thread. I predict the photos and anecdotes will thoroughly mess with his mind now! I like 911 that retain their usability and aren't all boy-racer. This car is dreamy, as is Ferry's. Surely if ever a car was a keeper, this is it? John (Connecticut/USA).

Thanks John, just beginning to find out how fabulous these cars are, built like tanks after the Ferrari!

It was great to be back at BS Motorsport. It seemed like I'd lived there during the Martini car build so it was like coming home. The guys checked the car over again,
did oil and brake fluid changes as it had been sat for a couple of years since being built. It went on the flat floor just to see what the suspension had been set too
and that all was fine.



The boys found an annoying oil leak that had been bodged at some stage, it was just a cheap seal that needed replacing but being in an awkward place someone
had tried cover it in rtv. Get the right people to do at these things and it's easy. Did the dizzy caps and rotor arms and it was good to go.

The only other thing I wanted at this stage was to replace the horrible Parrot radio thing that was in there. Treated the car to the Porsche Classic radio sat nav, more
from a design point of view more than anything, and so far it's brilliant.

This made me laugh. A few years ago, my girlfriend's (now my wife) Dad asked me about buying a 993. I gave him the usual list - C2, manual, not green, and no grey leather. Buy a good one from a very good dealer (they live not far from Paragon).

Thing is, he had already seen the car that he wanted to buy and wasn't going to do any shopping around. He came home with a C2, Tip, Aventura green with grey interior. Bought from the kind of local garage that sold used hatchbacks to grannies. The car no-one wants.

Since then, it has doubled in value and has somehow started to look pretty good. It never gets driven, so the paint looks better and better every year. Being an 'older gentleman', he is OK with the auto box.

So just to finish off the thread with a couple of things I'm not sure about. First thing I had to do was change the blue seat belts, although the GT2 had them it's just
a little too blingy for me, the seat backs and blue stitching are bad enough.



Then the steering wheel I think is a 996 version, I'm guessing it was used as the only 3 spoke with an air-bag you can get. I'm getting used to it but I do want to
try the Clubsport wheel I was talking about a while ago. I found an old one and our very own Garry at Classicfx has kindly agreed to give it a go. He's not refurbed
one of these before so should be interesting, especially as he has to embed a Porsche crest in the center....



Then finally, the whole front of the car right up to the scuttle is covered in paint protection film, that's bumper, hood and both wings right up to the doors. Now I
know I said I'm going to use this one and do some miles so that's probably good news, but to me it just doesn't look right on a beautiful paint job, it seems to take
something away from it. I've no paper work for what it is, or who did it, so I'm a little concerned about it's longevity.

I do hope they waited long enough between painting the car and putting the stuff on, I suppose I'll find out if and when I try to take it off!

Definitely using it, it's been out twice and it's only February...

Lastly I have a few ideas for the car but I'm under strict instructions to USE IT before messing with it! Thought about the rear wiper delete and lose the high level brake light but have to say they're growing on me, as are the standard orange glass front indicators and side repeaters, which people tend to change for clear. I think with so much red going on at the back of a 993 to go white at the front looks odd, but then that's probably just me.

The main thing though is the exhaust note. After the Ferrari it's a bit quiet and boring, nice burble on start up but turns into that normal air-cooled whine as you drive. Obviously don't want a dreadful bass rumble through the car but there must be a good halfway house. The cup exhaust where you lose the side boxes completely was suggested, but maybe to loud, then there was the RSR option but not sure what that's like. Then I've read about a by-pass modification to those side boxes, that may be the way forward so will investigate more.

Mike, have to say its odd posting about 993's on here.

The clip above I would say is an honest representation of the noise difference from changing the cat cells to a 200 cell sport cat.

I have done this on the C2S I owned, 993 Turbo and more recently on the RS. The picture below is whats was in my turbo cats when they opened them up.



Out of all the modification I have done over the cars this is probably the one I would recommend the most, the car just feels better, more able to breath and very slightly more eager. I have also had the silencers altered with the RSR mod (opened up and the sound deadening removed.....gives the exhaust a more metallic sound). Gert at Carnewal provides a very good service on both modifications. Personally I like both together but if I was selecting one only then the cats would be my choice.

I agree, that anti-chip film always looks odd when the car is sparkling clean, but once there's a smidgen of road dirt on it you won't notice it. If it were me, I'd leave it on for the time being and see how I felt about it in a few weeks.

Agreed on the seat belts though - get them gone!

Thanks Tom, good info on the cat's so will look into that. There are a couple of options, so should be interesting.
In the meantime tucked away at home now, though I may have gone a little over the top on the new reg plate.......
