I am in shock!

When MOTing my 2.4E the tester said my front tyres are borderline advisory so with the trip to CLM coming up I decided to invest in a set of CN36's.....fitted these yesterday and decided to take the car out for a 'quick' spin.....

.....suffice to say I cannot believe the difference a tyre could make to the handling of my car, truly staggering!!!

To be fair to the comparison my old XWX's were well worn at the front on the outer edges and had done nearly 18,000 miles, they were also dated 2011 and fitted a couple of years before the car went on the road.

Heading out on some dual carriageway to get the tyres warm my initial impression was the steering felt a fair bit lighter and noticably so around a few roundabouts as I headed for a stretch of road leading from Latton to Kempsford, a twisty B-road with some great bends but with a terrible bouncy surface in places. Previously I felt I was fighting the car in tight turns with the old XWX's but now it's far smoother. Taking it steady to start the car felt great on the road, so good in fact I turned around and drove the road again pushing a bit harder. By the third run I was really pushing and was amazed at how much of a difference the tyres could make soaking up the poor surface and revelling at being pushed hard into the turns as I took the long way around the bends to accentuate the curves. My fourth run up the road was bonkers, the steering wheel felt like silk in my hands and I was laughing as I drove, the tyres taking way more than I thought I could throw at them giving a satisfying squeal as I went from bend to bend.

Only a planned night out dragged me home, my wife thinking I'm nuts waxing lyrical about a set of tyres!........it was more than tyres to me, it felt like having a new toy!

The XWX is a great tyre but from my initial impression I think the CN36 is a whole different level if you enjoy driving enthusiastically.......highly recommended!

It's all true Darren65.

Not only does fitting the CN36 https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/pirell ... /cn36.html to your 911 make it drive better, but they can also make you more attractive to the opposite sex, help you give up smoking, get you promoted, entertain unwanted visiting relatives, make you win the lottery, make your children perform well at school, etc, etc.

Darren - I have a set on my 67S and agree with you, makes the car feel at one and well balanced through the twisty stuff, progressive oversteer when needed. I've always maintained you need the correct tyre fitment on a 911..

I recently had a set of these fitted to my car and got my first decent drive on them over the weekend. I had been wanting to try them for some time as my current tyres (Continental Premium Contact 2) are great at 7/10ths but lose front end grip when pushing on. I usually adjust the throttle to kill the understeer which is fine but it would be nice to have a more neutral set up. I’ve tried the Avon CR6 ZZ which is a great tyre in the dry but rides quite firmly and can be a little nervous in the wet. The idea was that the CN36 would sit somewhere in the middle.

My immediate response when setting off was that they felt quite like the Continentals. Nice and easy to steer, good ride and generally very nice. After a few miles, the extra grip was noticeable and the car hangs on very well at the front, even when pushing quite hard into turns. The rear nearly has too much grip and is hard to unstick. Overall, the balance of the car was excellent and the tyres were very predictable. One area that was a little disappointing was that the sidewalls felt very flexible, much like the Continentals. This probably helps the ride quality but you lose sharpness on turn in compared to the Avon’s. I managed about 150 miles on a variety of A and B roads and they were great. Also had about 50 miles in the rain and through some heavy showers and they were again very predictable.

I really liked the tyres and I would say they are ideal for road use. I’ll play around with the tyres pressures to see what feels best, I started with 29/34 and lowered to 28/32 which was better. I would like something more sporting ideally but choice is limited for my sizes so the Avons would be the next option and then you have to live with the firmer ride and wet weather compromise. The other significant factor is cost. The CN36 and Avon’s are about £1100 a set, the Continentals are a bargain £260 for a set of 4 and 80% as good for 25% of the cost!

Also have to say they look very cool so there is definitely some kerb appeal to the shape and tread pattern!

Thanks for your interesting and objective post on the CN36 vs Avon. I have only ever used Avons on my 'older' cars and am really wedded to them - i love their 'stickability' - but as a result i have nothing to compare them with and so have been reluctant to change. I know they are not a good cold weather tyre so i dont use them (the cars to which they are fitted) in the winter and will admit to being a fair weather driver of older cars, all of which seem to leak which is an extra incentive for not using them in the wet.

But this makes me think again as to something to try in the future when i have to replace them. Good insights.

.....I think you should run them down to 2mm and go out in the wet, it should give the desired effect......as they are you just need to be a little braver!
