you were lucky with the weather ! my mini version of this a week before with my brother (got as far as half way up the Brecon to Builth Wells b road) was plagued by torrential rain. And break downs (not mine though )

nothing quite like a good road trip

we had dinner at the walnut tree which was good but a lot further south than you guys went

Too right Dan, the Walnut Tree route was an option.. we went south to north and back, but starting further west than you. All great driving.

Can't make this one am temporarily Porscheless and have my kids tonight...

A few people have asked for the route and key roads so here goes ..... hopefully you can trace the route on a map and work out what works for you. I've added some comments and our stops in case you want to use them.

M4 Jnc 32 north up the A4061 - Section between Ogmore Vale and Treorchy is good
A4059 onto A470
A4215 west before Libanus and then south west on the A4067
A4068 toward Brynaman - Good food at the George Inn in Cwmtwrch http://the-george-inn.net/
A4069 north on the "mountain pass" - one of the best roads in black mountains! Scenery, twists and turns, sheep! You'll want to spend a bit of time here and repeat the run several times!
stay on the A4069 to Llangadog and on to Llandovery
A40 east toward Brecon - Lunch at the Griffin in Felin Fach http://www.eatdrinksleep.ltd.uk/

from Brecon take the B4520 and then B4519 north to Garth
A483 west to Beulah then B4358 north east toward Newbridge on Wells
pick up the A470 north to Rhayader
from Rhayader take the B4518 to Llanidloes and on to Llanbrynmair - some really fast roller coaster sections here
take the A470 west and then follow it all the way to Betws-y-Coed
join the B5106 to Tal-y-bont where you will find the splendid Groes Inn

From here you have a selection of great roads to play on:
A4086 west from Capel Curig onto A498 to Beddgelert
A4086 Llanberris Pass is good if you go early and miss the traffic - otherwise it is a tourist trap nightmare
B4407 east from Ffestiniog to Pentrefoelas will take you to the A5 and on to the Evo Triangle
A5 - A543 - B4501 forms the triangle - excellent roads but well policed so a reccy circuit is a good idea then do several laps.

A5 south east from Cerrigydrudion will take you to Corwen
from Corwen take the A5104 / A542 / A539 to Ruabon - includes the horse shoe pass but can get busy
also from Corwen, take the excellent B4401 south to Llandrillo
go to Tyddyn Llan for lunch - it is excellent http://www.tyddynllan.co.uk/
post lunch continue on the B4401 towards Bala
pick up the un-named road connecting to the awesome B4391 down to Llanfyllin
A490 south east to Welshpool
A483 south all the way to Builth Wells - some great fast sweeping sections
A470 back to Cardiff and home!

From Cardiff it is an 800 mile round trip. 2 days is plenty of time.

Stick rigorously to the speed limits in the built up areas for the residents safety and for your license! Plenty of fun to be had on the many sections showing the national speed limit.

Have fun - let me know if you have any questions. There are plenty of other good roads if you have time to explore. Other good places to eat are the Walnut Tree near Abergavenny and Checkers in Montgomery.

That first section brings back memories - I used to live in a little cottage next to the main road at Libanus and spent many happy hours/days tearing round that area and on up to Rhayader, etc. Back in the early 1980s, those roads were almost completely devoid of traffic, and no such things as speed cameras. Local police were nowhere to be seen, and only drove Land Rovers if they were about. Must revisit when the car's done!
