2.2s Targa rebuild

Hi Richard - just been reading back through this great Thread and wanted to say well done to date for everything that you've achieved !!

I happened to meet up with a dealer/restorer called Tony Outtridge a couple of weeks back - Tony's one of those guys that've have been around for ages and has some stories to tell.

Anyway - getting to the point - he's currently doing a full restoration of an American LHD Targa S in conda/metalic green - total nut and bolt job to (in my eyes) a very high standard indeed.

He's based in Hatfield so not that far from you.

Interestingly - he expects the car to sell for around £90k - I don't know if that'll be any kind of comfort to you when you're slogging away getting the rest of that paint off etc !!

PS - if you don't mind me asking - what did you do with that S Bumper ? I actually prefer them and would really fancy one for my car !!

Funny you should say that, I got the non-s bumper from Tony! Nice guy - he also had the Doctor's car there when I went over to see him, so I got to see that before its great resto!

The S bumper is surplus to requirements - it is only a fibreglass one, but in pretty good nick. Happy to pass it on for a few pounds - pm me if you want to discuss. I have some new struts to buy

£90k seems a lot for the car - I know they're rarer than the coupe S (I think they only ever made about 1500 over the two years) but coupes seem to command a price premium. I think Alan's 2.2s coupe went for that sort of money, but who knows....I do think I'll be insuring it for a bit more than the £40k I had it valued at before though!

I'd like to see Tony's resto - I've only ever seen one other 2.2s targa in real-life, it would be great to get some advice on various bits and pieces, thanks for the tip!

Not much to update on the cleaning - due to go to the blasters in a couple of weeks and then onto Barry's.

In the meantime, I have found some great wheels - currently they are at Harvey Weideman's in the states and will get the full resto treatment from him, but these are deep 6 without hearts! I found out that Porsche fitted these for only a few months (approx Aug 70 to around Feb / Mar 71) after which they went to flat 6's. Mine was built Sept 70 so this is spot on. Although the set is not date matched, they are 9,10,11 & 12/70 - I think this is one of those 'near enough' moments without compromising too much - they're just too lovely to pass up.

I have something of a mixed batch at the moment - 3 flat 6's, 1 deep without heart and one with a heart. Am going to refirbish the one with the heart as a spare - According to Harvey, it is likely that I would have had a 'heart' as a spare as the pile for the spares seemed to last longer in the factory - the fact that mine is just on the crossover date would seem to make this correct. I never thought I was going to get to this level of anal detail, but it just sort of sneaks up on you.

They look very nice and should be perfect once restored. Such an important part of our cars. My car was made in June 1970 and I have deep 6's with hearts.

So - a big day today. No rain for the first time in what seems like a month or so.

But also - I've finished with these



So it was off to the blasters today. Decided to make it a softie for a few hours....





Great idea John - really works a treat - I used 'pallet wrap' £6 for 300m - bargain! Then wrapped it up in a Halfords cheapie, stacked the Landie with as much metal as I could fit in and took an 'end of stage one' photo fresh out of my garage. Quite a moment for me this....

Thanks chaps. I agree Barry, the Landie always looks better towing, unless it's trucking through some offroad stuff. Great car.

So guess where we ended up -



Its just a total aircooled culture down there - so many buses, porsches - all good.



So back on with the wings for transport to the blasters and it's in Alan's tender care for a couple of weeks.



Big hole in the garage now....but plenty of bits lying around the outside of it....got to get on with them now!
