More help required :-

So its a 78 ish Targa, and these are where the under dash wires go through the bulkhead. Good news is that most of my switch gear from the original car has the plugs attached and will probably plug in. but I don't know which is which ! the one with the wires in goes to the ignition switch. but the others ??
Labeled A,B,C,D,E in no particular order !! A and B on the horizontal surface.
C,D and E on the vertical part

Pre 73 and post 74 looms are different although they look the same. I had to get my electrician match the 2 up for the last backdate we did

I have started to take a look at the wiring.
Whilst JTP has gone this route... (And a very nice job of it he has done

)

I have decided to ditch the old style fuses and go for modern Blade fuses. Like this

It is my plan to keep in line with the manuals and wiring diagrams as far as I possibly can, and use the same fuse numbering and order. The original panel takes a three, ten and eight fuse sections. Handily, the three fuse section isn't used as I have no electric windows , mirrors A/C etc so can dispense with this. Using the Ten and Eight section surface mount blade fuse boxes from Vehicle Wiring Products (LFB08 and LFB10) these just fit on the origin fuse tinwork from the later car (Same as JTP). One end of the Ten fuse section aligns with the wing mounting point, the other with an original fixing point of one of the old fuse boxes. Then by cleverly sharing this point like this ..

I can fit both boxes onto the same piece of tinwork with the addition of only one hole.

Now I've just got to finish slogging through the rest of the wiring to work out where to connect the spagetti !!

Probably a sensible idea, those original bullet fuse are poor to say the least. You will miss the joy of unreliable electrics if you go too far!

OK some progress today.
I've started to look at the wiring in the fuse box area. I've bought some posh crimp spade connectors, heat shrink ones !
They crimp on like this

and then heat all round using a hot air paint stripper, being careful not to burn the PVC insulation. The insulation shrinks, the glue runs and seals the joint

You can see the glue just oozing out !
Always use a good quality crimp tool though

They look quite good on there.

starting to get somewhere now, still lots to work out. Good job Bob is pushing on this else it would take me much longer !!

Nice wiring Tim: I used similar ones on the Gulf Blue car (as I converted the loom to RHD).

I tested one, and the sheathing on the wire let go before the connector: just the job and well worth the extra money and effort.

Looking forward to seeing yours on the road soon

Well you certainly won't want to see pictures of parts being cleaned, painted and prep'd for re-assembly !!
I havent spent all of the last year kiting !!
I have decided to take a punt on on a "chuck it in and fingers crossed" spec engine !! Hopefully it will run for a while. We'll see
