DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

That's very generous of you to offer Mick.

One of our initial thoughts were to make this a DDK resoration car. Brendan had an exploratory meeting with Bootsy to explore how this might work. However, it was decided that there would be many pitfalls and complications, especially if a great number of DDKers were involved. We are acutely aware how long this restoration will take and the expense likely to be involved as no doubt extra problems would crop up along the way.

So, our number one thought was put to bed..........

why not try and get the Porsche Classic factory resto guys involved and do a UK version of the car they restored in the US in conjunction with the porsche owners club over there... ie like a case study, in the magazines and on the web

Brendan spoke to the Classic Porsche workshop manager at CLM on their stand and we have emailed him several times since. We have had NO reply. Not even a no thank you it's not our bag.

We had hoped the factory shop would be interested. We have banged our heads against the wall on this one and it was one of our main hopes............ This car MUST be saved.


Our second option was put to bed............

What a shame that the guys at Porsche Classic seem to be so uninterested. Again, thanks alot for keeping us updated on this amazing story.
Hopefully you will figure out a way to bring this cracker back to its former glory soon.

I think the problem (if you can call it such) with Porsche Classic is that they must get so many similar requests. I know Jochen is buried with museum work and developing 'new' products to add to the range. The US resto was seen as a way to publicise this new branch of the company – it's job was done in that respect as we all now know about PC.

A communal DDK project would be a nightmare – it would only take one disgruntled contributor to bring it to its knees. Also, while there may be some members for whom £100 is nothing, right now I suspect there are many more for whom £100 is quite a lot to give away.

I hope the car does get restored – it does indeed deserve it. Sometimes, though, an amazing discovery can prove to be too much to take on (don't ask me how I know).

I've read this thread with interest from the start and it is indeed a great story.

I don't quite understand some of the issues with the restoration though so would be grateful if someone could enlighten me:

1. Why would this be significantly more expensive than a "normal" good quality restoration assuming the car is complete? I appreciate preservation sometimes takes more time than just replacing things and while no restoration is cheap, is there any reason why this would be particularly expensive?

2. There was a comment made about what you would do with it after the resto? Is there any reason you wouldn't drive it and take it to events etc? It is a very interesting car that people would appreciate and I am sure would have sufficient value to make the restoration costs worthwhile?

There is the obvious issue of finding the money for the resto in the first place, which I appreciate can be significant.

Agreed, you'd have to cover everything legally, create shares of ownership etc. to make it watertight and thats' not really the DDK way - a casual agreement amongst interested parties could prove a nightmare!

You two's purchase cost plus a bit of profit, time and effort, etc: £40
Bung in some for 10k in 1yr: £1k

Sell 100 tickets at £420 or sell 400 at £120 winner takes car at some big fancy celeb packed gala draw (I'm seeing TV cameras, Biggins, Carolgees, Edmunds, you know proper A listers), resto is going to take a couple of years so you've got plenty of time to organise and sell the tickets.

Just a concept guys, just toss it away if you think it doesn't have legs to run. But with some creative thinking, a Del Trotter attitude and some Braveheart courage I think it could work, though somebody might be left holding the baby.

Just come to this thread. Very cool. I dare not challenage Andy's knowledge but there are people restoring cars for less on here. I don't see how the cost go up for an 0001 car?

I will probably be shot for this but change it back to a lhd and offer in one of those US auctions if don't intend you hold it.
