Update - weirdly, the orange rust seems to be slowly disappearing back to a black / grey staining. Could it be that the phosphate is still at work after all these days?

I'm still going to get it blasted though. DDK to the rescue - have been recommended a place fairly close to here.

Am still feeling the matte paint vibe. Tan or silver.

Then time to pick a colour and paint after the blast!

Indeed, crack on with getting some protection on there so it doesn't come straight back again!

Not a fan of matt paint myself, each time I see one I think 'that would look great with some clear coat over it'

Difficult to clean, touch up and maintain.

A standard solid colour that's not over polished and preened is a good compromise.

I'm sure whatever you choose it will look great so just ignore us chipping in from the side!

I keep saying matte - I really mean satin.

I painted my old Volvo 850 in matte grey (primer) and every piece of dirt that it ever came into contact with was ingrained in the paint.

I'm thinking more:

It would be a brave move.

For the overall look to work the general style of the car (wheels, details, trim etc) would need to gel perfectly. It could look very cool with the right choices but .....

I remember seeing a few customs over the years including Beetles where this type of finish was used. The rest of of the car was left stock and it just looked like something had gone wrong with the paint

Yeah, that's my worry. I want the car to look bog-stock except for a bit of lowering.

I really like satin cars. They're really nice to photograph, too. I wish I could find the photos of the E63 AMG that I shot a few years ago - was satin anthracite sort of colour. Was lovely.

I have a feeling this excursion is going to end-up with me wimping-out back with Sand Beige again.

Everything looks better in California. That's why so many Sand Beige cars were sold there.

I've got it in my head that this is a night time car. I don't expect it will go to any shows, it probably won't go on track days. I mostly used my last one at night.

I've downloaded a bunch of pictures of satin cars. They look cool, but it's not the look I'm going for - it's less about the 'satin', and more about maximising the sculptural quality of the shell itself. The silver truck above works for me. As soon as you add colour, it gets in the way of the shape.

This 300SL kind of kills the satin argument though. Nothing more sculptural than this...

I like playing this game especially as someone else has to make the decision..anthracite satin?
