Ah, that makes sense. Might also account for the stumbling in on-off throttle situations in heavy traffic. I'll take a look.

And as for your other suggestion,m you're right!

Well, after having what I believed to be cam chain tensioner failure, and then replacing the tensioners with pressure-fed tensioners, and having them 'fail', we've discovered the mystery noise was nothing to do with the tensioners – it's a broken valve spring (inlet on #3)!!!

What a pain that is as a lot has to come off the engine.

Not too bad - compressed air into cylinder. Can be done with engine in the car if needs be, but will drop engine to give better access, though. Shame Bob's not around to comment. :(

Bummer - but on the plus side at least you've found the problem - it'll be great when it's fixed
