Steve,
Lets take a closer look at the Orange eBay RS. I don't know which chassis # it is exactly but we can narrow that down a bit.
The seller states the car was an Austrian delivery. The ad states: "Datum der Erstzulassung" of 12-18-1972. I am not certain what "Erstzulassung" means (is it date of manufacture or registration?). So this puts it as an early first series RS. When you look at the RS book the possible chassis #s are only 0026 and 0188 for a Tangerine M472 with a sunroof delivered in OR.
The 0026 car was made in 10/72 and 0188 was made in 12/72. I noticed something in one of the restoration photos. It looks to me that the RS doesn't have the tunnel reinforcement modification. Do you guys agree with this?

If so then would mean it is probably the 0026 car as this modification first appeared in production on 10/19/1972?
Question for Paul. Does 0024 have this modification? I looked at the photos in your thread but there is a piece of cardboard over this area in the best photo.

Anything more you can tell us about the amazing car 964RS? Perhaps the colour even? I don't know Vic's favourite colour?964RS wrote:Something tells me its not going to sell at the current ebay price!!! Beautiful car though...Lightweight_911 wrote:The text translates approx to:

It would be a tragedy if they took a low e-bay offer on this car though!
Cheers,
Steve.

Here are just a few random thoughts about the car as it appears in the photos. I do this not to be 'mean spirited' and tear down someones car but to maybe help Steve determine if this car might be a car he would consider looking at further.
On the inside photos I see many nice things like sport seats, nice dash, correct gauges (especially a correct 250 Km/hr speedo and oil temp/press. gauge), original door panels and pockets. I also notice incorrect carpets, missing paint tag, painting mistakes like un-painted door hinge bolts and body color paint showing aroung the door panel. There is also a black headliner which was probably not in this car originally. Missing elastic cord on right door pocket. Nothing major.
On the underside it appears to have a painted steel front cross member instead of an AL one and incorrect yellow front shocks.
In the trunk area the AL VIN plate looks to be a replacement based on the # of lines and configurations of the boxes (would like a close up to be sure though). The tool kit is from a later 911. Very minor item but the tank hold down tabs are painted.
Engine compartment shows an obivious red fan (guess they want the fan to match the shroud
). Also a yellow, plastic oil cap and there should be no decal in the middle possition on the left side of the lid latch. Although I do note it has a correct knurled knob on the Hostalen cover.
For some reason there is a missing portion of the CARRARA decal, incorrect '74 outside mirror, red hood badge, and miss-aligned hood on the right side (?). Missing rear bumper AL caps.
Really minor stuff but it would be very important to know about the body panels, welded RS flairs, ducktail, front spoiler, VIN and Production # stampings, engine and transmission #s. Only a close, personal inspection can spot all those items.

Hi Brian,
I'm afraid that I don't have the knowledge to answer your questions; would be great if it was that car though!
I have e-mailed them for further info and a firm price, and I asked them why they are having to resort to Evil bay to market it? Or is that just a marketing ploy? I also pointed them to this thread.
How did you happen on it Brian?
Does anybody know about this operation, has anybody heard anything good or bad about them?
I'm in Tangerine-dream land again!
Steve.

Hi Brian,
Here's a couple of photos from my file - I think these are the best I have of that area....
[/img]
[/img]
I guess the Tangerine Dream looks like it might be missing the doubling plate over the end of the tunnel but then again, it looks like they still might be working on that section perhaps?

Well there are more clued in people than me contributing to this thread, but I reckon with a bit of bargaining downward that's a fair price in this market and the "make it perfect" list of work is by no means onerous. I would also contend that subject to checking the other details you mention, if someone wants a Tangerine RS Touring, this is as probably going to end up being as good as any other car.
At the end of the day (excuse cliche) are we drivers or museum curators?
I have a very good friend who bought a Ferrari 250 GT SWB. It was lovely, usable and in 9 tenths condition. He spent a fair bit of cash to make it concours winning and now he doesn't drive it.....because in some way, suddenly, he doesn't know why he owns it.
Sometimes, slight imperfection is the road to greater pleasure. It just takes the doubt away. Doesn't mean you can't create perfection at a later date if the essentials are there, but does give you license to go a bit wild right now. These things were put on earth to be enjoyed and they have 30 years of history written all over them. God forbid anyone judges me based on how I looked even 20 years ago.

Agree 100% - there is no scope for misrepresentation, ever.
But I guess my secondary point is that I am passionate that cars end up with good, thoughtful custodians who can work on the less than perfect elements as time passes and make them even better examples over time. Add positively to their history if you lke. Thats what I like to think I'm doing with my cars. Then we make them available to the next round of buyers, as and when.
As for price, well I still think RS Tourings are cheap at 150-160k!! Sorry!!
1,311 odd F40's and an average one is 225k? I promise you, after 7 years in the driving seat of an F40, as great as it is, I'd rather have a 2.7RS and 60 grand in my pocket. Same applies (with slightly different marginal economics to the 993GT2, Carrera GT etc etc). No comparison.
Sorry to play devils advocate but this is a 2.7RS thread and, well, thats my humble opinion.

FWIW i agree all points from our friend in Indiana, especially cant suss the yellow front Bilsteins ............black head lining was an option .Other bits blindingingly obvious and therefore especially things like yellow oil cap inexplicable as so unneccessary[ though my sons 993 has a Nissan/diesel petrol cap!] Extra decal common error in my experience, colour coded fan no comment ! ...............if its a genuine car think its positively good value !

It's very interesting, the market at the moment....
Last summer, I had the chance to buy an original UK RHD red (of course!) Ferrari Daytona with 1 owner and only 28,000 miles from new. I would probably have been able to deal it down to about 85kGBP and now, only 6 months later, these have generally doubled in value.... Perhaps there is a resurgence in the classics market as people realise what's available for the same price as a new Uber Benz or BMW...
