So, working my way through my list of jobs, I'd been looking for a suitable interior rearview mirror.

Porsche had obviously raided the parts bins for the original cars & installed a 356A/B mirror so I set out to find a good used one with some 'patina' &, being a cheapskate, i didn't want to pay 'top dollar' ...

Since I knew I could buy a new reasonable quality repro version for ~ $100 + shipping (which, if it came to it, I could buy & 'distress' suitably) I used this as my ceiling when looking for a used mirror ...

After a number of false starts, I tracked a suitable one down in the US which had been laying in a box on a shelf for the past 30 yrs, having been removed from a crashed car in the late '70's ..... a 904 !

Obviously, I have no way of substantiating this (& what does it matter anyway) but the seller did have some more 904 parts & was well-known in Porsche racing circles back 'in the day' so I was happy to pay his asking price ............... $20 + $15 shipping !!!

I also bought a few more bits from him ...

Here's the mirror as received:

The original 4-cylinder 904's used basic horizontally-sliding 2-piece plastic windows in their doors - the front portion was fixed & only the rear section slides to create quite a small opening.



There is no other form of cockpit ventilation so many of the cars have been fitted with 'bubble' vents to get a bit more cool air to the occupants.

Studying several original cars, it seemed as though there was no standard location for the vents - each car seems to have them placed slightly (or in some cases totally) differently, so I used '028' (which has been in the same ownership since 1970) as an approximate guide (but installing them slightly lower as Alex is taller than me) :



So I removed the fixed windows & made up a template to ensure that the left & right side windows had the vents symmetrical.

A 55mm hole was then drilled using a suitable diamond-tipped holesaw:






Then the 'bubble' vent was popped into place




- & the window re-installed




- &, for the benefit of DeRRis - the plastic screws have retained their 'patina'

Superb attention to detail and such a stunning looking car. Wonderful work!

Andy absolutely wonderful. Can't wait to see the car in the flesh one day.

Does the car use a 911 screen or a 356?
