Lets dig a little deeper and reveal a bit more:

40 years old and over 170,000 miles and yet it still looks like the day it left the factory.

Is that a rocker shaft that has backed out I see or am I mistaken, was it stored underwater ? Goodness...

This looks familiar... better than mine, but still familiar!

KS,I nearly mentioned your damp storage conditions too but was worried it might still be too painful !

TBH it is not as bad looking as Brendan's engine and that was a running car. I bet you will have pistons rings at least.

Is this clear and golden?

The heads were removed and we can take a look inside the bores...

It's true.

The engine was taken apart and inspected. Nick pronounced it fine, a good core to work with.
There were no hidden surprises.

I'd love to show you the worn cam lobes or the broken piston rings.
Maybe a dropped valve or even just a stretched chain?
Or perhaps some evidence of a more catastrophic event. But there was none.

It was tired but had suffered from nothing more than being old and weary.
Considering the possibility of damaged cases or over worn cranks this was very good news indeed.
And meant the car would remain ‘matching numbers’.

This engine had already had its second wind (that earlier rebuild from back in the eighties) but this time - yet another rebuild - was to be the best and most comprehensive.
After the reconditioning it would emerge like new. In fact better - and more powerful - than when new.

The considered opinion was that the pistons could be salvaged.
However the barrels were past it.
There was evidence of the thin Nikasil plating flaking in places and they were deemed scrap.
