This is deo a retro fit sunroof. The car has had drain tubes/holes added to the shell. Its the main steel piece that has been welded to the car that Ross would ideally like to remove for repair/rustproofing. Any thoughts?

Unless Margaret is keen to keep the sunroof, I would think it will be a lot easier (& cheaper in terms of labour) to delete it ...

Was just typing the same, maybe a carbon panel even if you then paint it?

And this comes from someone who cut the roof off a Beetle to put a metal sunroof in it

The delete panels available are to fill the factory aperture last time I looked (to delete my fabric roof) so could be a good option.

To weld one in is easy, I've welded in far bigger roof panels into rooves in the distant past.
The carbon over panel is very tempting but I'm not sure about the step at the edges.

Saw a few yesterday for around £500 and more, one supplier just 10 miles from me.

Oddly, I've been looking at my sun roof today, to delete or repair.
Irritatingly had a whole 911 roof panel (no sun roof) about 10 years back, cost £250 but sold it to someone who wanted to delete a horrid aftermarket glass tilt roof, same as fitted to my 911 in the 80's.

Dansk roof panel is £1600!

Does the COA say it had a sunroof? With it being a RHD car, and it has been added, would it not be better, as already said to delete it completely?
If you are going to do all this work for a rebuild, it may be the best thing to do?

Found the COA and it turns out that sunroof was never an option, though the headliner has an access zip. The car had its colour change in 2003 so I’m thinking the sunroof was added then. P.s thanks everyone for their input on Kit so far

New outer fabric just ordered, £155. Will need a new tube of EVOSTIK too..

Been on my mind for a few months already, needed to make my mind up!

So I've got a question from Ross who is doing the work:

"What do people do about removing the wiring loom.....does anyone split it in the tunnel for example?"

Whilst grovelling about in my own thread I realised I posted a short guide! Probably too late now but might help for when you put it back in

For future reference the technique of choice is:
- Disconnect loom inside luggage bay
- Feed loom into cabin down by the pedals and remove grommet
- Mark position of loom relative to starter cable with some coloured tape so you know when they are back in the right place.
- Straighten the loom out and fully wrap in tape from where it splits
- Wrap a strong flexible wire around the loom for the last 30cm or so and tape it in place. Make sure the wire is long enough to allow the harness to exit the cabin and there still be a good meter or so spare.
- Disconnect starter cable from battery
- Feed starter cable into cabin
- Wrap another lead wire around the starter cable and again wrap in electrical tape

- With the help of an assistant pull the starter cable out first. One person inside the car feeding it straight and the other in the engine bay pulling.
- Then do the same with the main loom
- You may find the starter cable sticks half way so you might need to move the loom with it.

- To replace pull the main harness through first, remembering to have fed it over the torsion tube.
- Assistant at the back guiding and feeding
- Then do the starter cable. Lubricate it with a bit of washing up liquid or your lube of choice…

I'd wholeheartedly recommend silicon spray for feeding wiring through tight spaces. It's more inert than washing-up liquid.

I also removed the battery terminal from the main cable. Made sliding the wire out easier (& it benefitted from re-making anyway)

Remove it - people sell the blanking panels now - I got mine from Fenn lane (so that's no longer an option)

Another vote here to remove it unless you really enjoy the sunroof experience
