Not much to update as got a really big property project taking up m6 time , but I have put the electrics together and check it all works ….next step is to install the servo into the electric box, but I’m going have to get my head around using a 3m adhesive rather than bolting in place

I was doing something similar yesterday.
Erratic operation, but realised I had no crystal in the Rex….matching pair on order.
Are those NiCad batteries?

Yep piggy back and have to be located different to the instructions

Managed to grab 1/2 hour after the F1 yesterday to try and progress the build.

I have this bit, the installation of the servo, controllers and battery. My main issue is the instructions say use the provided 3m tape to locate the steering servo. Doesn’t sit well with me, but as the point of this is a stock build like I might have done as a kid I’m going to do as they say.

I bought the kit with the model shop also supplying all the radio gear etc, so I’ve got the large piggy back battery which needs to be located differently …. Also as it turns out the on/ off switch for the control unit is a different design and won’t screw into place .

First off was build up the steering control rod that links the servo to the ‘rack’ . Picture shows it built as instructions, but the design and location of my servo means I’ll slide the bellows further along the rod so it doesn’t compress so much in action

If I get some time this week will get it all mounted to the chassis and the wheels built up u

At last managed to grab a bit of time to myself and got on with the build.

All the electrics mounted to the chassis and steering servo connected up to the steering. Noticeable toe in for the front wheels which I’ll need to adjust out



Next step was putting together the 3 piece split rims … fiddly buggers these turned out to be if you have fat fingers like mine





I fitted the remainder of the updated bearings to the front wheels And they were are , finally a rolling chassis



Switched everything on and had a quick blast across the carpet and quickly realised I’ve got to get the steering alignment sorted as it won’t currently turn

I've been watching your build with interest James. I still have some models from when I was young. Because I was putting some Christmas decoration boxes in the loft, I took the opportunity to take some pics of the cars. I may have to recommission them this year.
The Toyota hi lux was my first, but its a bit slow because of the three speed gearbox, so not as much fun as the frog. My father in law had my frog for a while to update it, but by putting in an electronic speed controller, took away some of the fun, because when speeding along, you can't just jam it into reverse and lock up the rear wheels, to do a faux hand brake turn. I'll find another analogue controller to put back in it. All good fun. Looking at my cars, they are both red and that's not my favourite colour for cars!
Hope the building work is going well also.

That hilux is proper retro cool though

# 109 HiLux is a real model MAKER car, all of that looks very bespoke to me, a man with a lathe and a drill (etc), fabulous.

I've seen those Beatties bags several times on ebay while looking for a Tamiya project. Illustrations look as though I've drawn them even. Spooky.

Great projects to 're-commission' indeed.

Come to think of it Thom, I'd just got my first pair of glasses back then, early eighties serial killer style and even i must have had that look too........

Wet mucky day here so adjusted the steering rods and all is good , but still had hardly any steering angle when powered up as the servo only moved a small amount .. was starting to annoy me until I realised the transmitter ( hand set ) had a knob which controlled how much sweep angle the steering servo would move through ! So now I have full steering

Managed to upset the dog by giving the bare chassis a run around the kitchen

So next job is the body but as graham mentioned in his thread, this weather is not really paint spraying conditions and there is no way I’ll risk the wrath of the wife by spraying inside the house

NOT a job for inside or you will be in A&E before you blink.

The Tamiya paint aerosols are superb, as it their masking tape. The paint solvent is evil, hence in the garage.

I painted my shell in 5 degC and raining, but the shell is far smaller than yours.

A lot of masking to get the original sandscorcher look ( for me has to be the white with blue )

Buy some super sharp and pointed model knives, it is tight inside the shell.
