Re: 68S
Correct regarding the alloy cases but cant be 100% sure just yet - can be an excpetion the the rule esp when 4080784 is only 107 from the official changeover number.DEEMAN wrote:I guess that it should be mag engine which it is not. I think the change over was 4080681, What else have you seen Robin? The mixture of plating finishes on the cam feed line?
Number stamps themselves, the 7 looks wrong shouldn't be a kink in the downstroke, the 4 doesn't look right either with the horisontal stroke a tad short past the vertical stroke. But the 7 is the main issue - metal around this area looks odd?
last part that I can't quite make out is that you can see the the build number, and while I can't make it out it loos to me that there are only 4 digits - not 5 if build number 12X57....?
From the early911S registry I see some 901/02 cases listed with 4 digit build numbers like this one 4080179 build bulid number 9626 - so could be 4080384 thats been changed.... the 3 to a 7? This too seems unlikely - lets see what the auction house come back with on a pic of the build number and engine type number.....

Re: 68S
I see what you mean on the 4.
As you say though, it’s the 7 that’s clearly iffy. The curved downstroke of the 7 in your picture is right, the kinked one is not.
I’ve also never seen a number stamped quite so neatly and crisply as that.

Re: 68S
Looking at the two pictures that have been posted on this thread, one number reads down, and the other reads up from the oil pressure switch - which one would be the correct way of stamping, or did this not matter?.........just an observation

Somebody forged a number on the aluminium engine.
Who owns the original (mag) engine?

Re: 68S
The orignal mag engine (and I suspect orignal transmission) are owned by a good friend of mine - he wants to remain anonymous letting me post this as he doesn't have as much detailed knowledge on the subject.IanM wrote:Correct.DEEMAN wrote:I guess that it should be mag engine which it is not. Re: 68S
A quick update: -
The Auction house are now aware of the full situation and to quote "getting to the bottom of it" - while its a bit of a mess at the moment it's nothing like the mess if the car were to be sold with what in essence is a non-original engine/transmission. I've also gained knowledge from well respected members on on this forum and the car itself is what it seems to be - a RHD 68S.

Re: 68S
The e-catalogue is now online with the original description of matching numbers and vendor discovering the original engine etc etc. Hopefully Historics will issue an amendment.

Re: 68S
I still see the ad for the car mentions the engine number but not the fact that the engine in it is a fake. Also see that the price hasn't changed, no way is this car worth anything over £100k with non matching engine and transmission....

Interesting to note that they’ve changed the description now-Ralph wrote:Fortuitously the vendor managed to locate the original engine - yeah, right!
I'd look very close at that engine number.......................
This superb example has been restored to a very high standard by an exceedingly capable and fastidious vendor. Having purchased the car a number of years ago after she was left on a farm, the car was totally stripped and the body sent away for specialist repair. The engine and gearbox were fully rebuilt and the electrics were completely overhauled. Brakes, suspension, steering and tyres were all replaced.
