I have been to NI a few times but don't cut me down for my lack Irish history. Brendan has been trying to give me a crash course on the origins of the Isle of Ireland and it's sooooo complicated. The last lesson was on 'Ulster' which I think I got my head around.

Eire is the Irish translation of Ireland so saying Ireland or Eire in this context is actually saying the same thing. Ireland typically refers to the island of Ireland which encompasses Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The word Eire is found on our currency, passport and the lips of visiting American tourists...

I did this trip on the motorbike with my girlfriend last year. Was easy to get to from the UK and well, well worth it.

My top tips...

If you're there in tourist season (we were) f*ck off the b*stard Ring of Kerry. It's a dreadful tourist trap full of The Worst Kind of Americans being carted around in tour buses. The rest of the Wild Atlatntic Way is empty by comparison. I swear they must confine them to that one area to keep the rest of the place looking as unspoilt as it does.

Drive the road over the mountain to Dingle. It's the bollocks.

Go to Garinish Island. Bizarre, lush sub-topical microclimate with seals and palm trees and an Italian garden.

Go to the Cliffs of Moher. Walk past the visitor centre, up to the cliff edge, turn right, go through the small gap in the fence and follow the well-trodden path. The 'official' bit is really nothing that special (if you've seen Beachy Head or Dover), but the bit further up is absolutely incredible (and terrifying).
