Hi Murph, I noticed your car, I couldn't really miss it in that colour (I and my 14 year old son love it by the way)! I'd take the embarrassment of driving your Targa any day. Have you any idea of the grief I get for owning a MX5?

The car is currently running 170bhp at 6psi. The TD04 is a small turbo and I've had it mapped so the power curve is really linear. It doesn't feel boosted to drive, just a bit more perky than normal

Simon, you might be getting your targas mixed up.

You might be right Mick, I think it was yours that caught my eye. Lovely looking car in a great colour. Are Targas generally frowned upon?

Targas are great cars .... In fact any working early 911 is a great car

I'd happily drive an air-cooled Targa but with the Porsche bubble not looking to burst anytime soon, it's not likely I'll ever get my hands on one. 997's are certainly looking good value and definitely better looking than a 996.

I found you guys through a spike in viewing numbers on my video. You can see through the analytics what sites have embedded a clip

MX.... great car, lovely balance, the future midget / sprite . I'd have one tomorrow ...ohh I do already...guilty secret . We have a "merlot" special edition in the fold. Very tempted with a cheap rusty one to modify .

Targas are cool now, especially since I got one. I have been loving mine in this sunny weather, really is a good balance between coupe and cab. They are still less desirable than a coupe so you can still get an aircooled targa for bottom 997 money, albeit a slightly shonky one. Depends whether Sir prefers worrying about bore scoring or broken headstuds.

The investment that 911 ownership involves would be a big leap of faith for me. I've heard the horror stories regarding engine issues on some 996 and 997s, and the bills that go with them. I do still find the 997 one of the best looking water-cooled cars and I can afford one at a push. My other concern is whether I would get as much enjoyment out of driving one the way I do my Mazda. Putting the cost of consumables aside, the thought of backing a £25k motor into a tyre wall brings me out in a rash. My Mazda is worth more in bits than the whole so I'll never be far out of pocket. Which do I value more??

I was never a fan of the MX5 until I got a passenger lap at the Nurburgring in a near stock (suspension and Toyo 888s) mk2 by a chap with 600+ laps experience. It blew me away and scared the crap out of me in equal measure. For the sheer enjoyment of low speed, rear wheel drive, cheap as chips fun, I can't think of a better alternative. When you go for that cheap one to modify, try and stick with an import, the rust on UK cars these days is appalling and expensive to fix properly.

Hi Beardy, I was really hoping that you had a rotary conversion in your mx.
I have a Mazda fetish but its early Rx7's for me, I'm doing well though, down to 2 now !

Why do I want a suped up mx5 now?!

Had quite a few mx5's and loved them all but missus has the SLK now for top down motoring and I'm not a fan.

Wonder if I could get a hot track focused MX5 that would be ok on the roads for her also?

I can see track days being on the agenda again if I could!

Mk3 MX5s are looking good value at the moment, more refined than a earlier car and a lot less rot to worry about. Some suspension, brake pads, exhaust and a re-map and half decent tyres and you'll have a ball. Get the 2 litre and you already have a slippy diff too. Perfectly useable for your wifes commute

RX7's are lovely, the red one at Spa looked great and was tastefully modified too. Again there are lots of horror stories about the reliability of the rotary motor which I'm sure are over exaggerated. I like the fact my conventional motor never breaks. Can you post up a pic of your Mazdas?

No problems with reliability as long as you look after them with plenty of oil changes and regular thrashings
