Early Magneti Marelli Twin Plug Distributor….

The range of MM distributors developed of the years, you'll note the later type for 2.4 cases onwards had an integrated cast clamp….

…when remanufacturing these items you obviously need an original to replicate from…

…seen here with one of Ben's later type castings…

….moulds produced…

….prototype casting…

…next to the original…

Image

…parts sourced for the internals…

…and these lumps of steel…

…are transformed into spindles…

…as I said elsewhere…...clever stuff! 8)

I'll post additional photos of the process as I receive them from Ben including those of the fan housing which he's really excited about.

More soon…

Fan housing moulding….quite complicated I understand and formed to produce the same casting marks as per the original. The part number will have its own separate cast…

I've been looking at the differences between the aluminium fan housing I purchased and the reproduction Ben is working on….

….it matches the original with a variance in the thickness of the outer edge seen here…

Image

Image

….although the end should be square rather than tapered…

Image

…there won't be any differences with the magnesium version being produced and just the like the original will look unfinished and pretty rough! ….

Great thread Darren :)

Note Elevenparts: 'Attention - the small 227 mm fan housing was designed for engines without the engine mounted oil cooler. It should not be used for engines with mounted oil cooler'.

In my ignorance, I am unclear why the engine oil cooler would need to be removed (bypassed?) with a smaller fan - surely it's helping not hindering cooling when the fan diameter is reduced?

Thanks Martin,

I would guess that the larger fans suck more air into the regular Behr oil cooler although I'm pretty sure you'd be fine if just the fan housing was changed.

The race engines didn't have the engine mounted oil cooler as it wasn't needed, in it's place was an additional race oil filter housing with disk filter……like you I'm running twin front mounted oil coolers which'll keep things pretty cool and I don't plan on spending much time in traffic anyway so decided to go the whole hog! 8)

Btw….I think the smaller fan housing is good for an extra 7-8 BHP……..absolutely crucial then!

Did i read Stretch on the above part or is this wine better than i thought Darren.
Nice thread Darren. :) Interesting that the 2247cc ST engine had the engine mounted cooler with one wing mounted cooler.

Saving is going well. When do we cough up then. An interesting point raised on the S thread regarding the internals.?
Any news on this.

Dave, I think the dizzies are about one week away from completion. You pay when you're happy!

As with the later RSR type twin plug distributors, two types are available, one a full reproduction with all internal matching parts and one with Bosch type internals. I understand either are suitable.

....and I think that reads 'strech'....whoever he is!

The repro 3 leaf points for the standard road dizzy are readily available. However the 4 leaf racing type for the twin plug have been NLA for years.
