so later in the restoration I realise this b-post is not period correct.. arhh, will come back to this later with a back date of post from measurements.

so looking at later cars many did not have the bottom of the inner kidney welded to the chassis, on my car, one side was welded , one side was not. Forum discussion led me to conclusion to weld across the bottom, others may have different opinion, please feel free to comment..

further repairs to rear quarter...

replacing previous patch repair and corrosion, we ultimately revisit this area with a blinker box rebuild when move onto the rear latch panel crossmember

final repairs to the bottom of the a posts and front of outer sills

after many months, it is starting to take form... still alot of rot to deal with on the passenger side and rear of the car..

Very interesting and good progressional photography. Its always helpful to see the way in which folk tackle their projects. Keep the pictures coming please.

Thanks for the torsion bar repair pics, very interesting.I restored my 73 she'll in 1988 and it was rusty, but nothing like yours, but the torsion bar area was particularly bad on both sides and the sill and floor edges too.
Your floor itself is good?

I have seen kidney bowls with a large hole in the bottom (about 25mm x 10mm), and ones with a small pressed drain. Basically anything on these cars with these small pressed 'pimple' drains - kidney bowls, A post bases, early rear quarter seat belt mount supports, targa bar to inner wing brackets etc etc, all rust away much quicker than the rest of the car. I think they block too easily, collect wet crud and rust has a field day. So........ I think it is vital that your kidney bowl has a large drain hole at the bottom, and I also made a 8mm hole towards the top so I could periodically pump Dinitrol or Waxoyl into it. I put a plastic plug in the latter.

I suppose you could try to keep everything out and seam weld it up completely all the way around, but unless your weld is fully waterproof condensation will get you in the end.

Just my opinion/experience to date.

Good luck with the build - just tackle a bit at a time and NEVER look at the whole! (hole)

IGNORE THIS LOAD OF BOLLOCKS I WROTE - it refers to the outer kidney bowl, and you clearly are discussing the inner kidney bowl. Onset of dementia, short sight and plain stupidity for which I apologise.

Hello hillclinber, floor was replaced in a previous owner's restoration.
The welding was lower quality, the floor is being re welded.

ok, alot of patching around the front bumper mounts, all gets cut out

old rusty retained nut left in place to help with positioning, subsequently cut out and replaced
