Oh, that's great stuff: really brings so much more to ownership, that sort of thing.

Top job on the plating BTW, I bet most people never actually get round to using these kits. Looks very impressive.

Why would you do that huge weld on the rear inside bukhead (the panel in the first pic)?
Amazing to see the state of the cars being fixed-up today and i thought mine was bad all those years ago.

Great work.
Keep the pics coming please.

Hi Garry, Lewis here, I bought the rear cage from you recently.

Keep the posts coming, it's really great reading/viewing!

Arr the bulkhead welding

The welding (if you can call it that) around rear tunnel & bulkhead was a so called repair to the rear torsion tube. If you look back at one of the early pictures I posted you can see one of the car with the rear suspension collapsed. This was caused by a split in the tube which houses the rear torsion bar, thus to effect a repair you then cut a huge square out the bulkhead & tunnel/kick plate to gain access. Then cut the middle of the tube out and weld a new piece in (without the outer tub) just to make things as dangerous and unpractical as possible.

Job done

This was one of the first talking points when it arrived at Chesterton. Thus to correct this bodge I sourced a replacement tube (SC) which will be replaced with the existing suspension brackets from the SWB one.

“Simples” :(

Thought it must be to do with the tube, but i thought they failed where they pass into the two side inner /outer panels of the rear lower box members.
Serious to fail in the centre!

Wow the workmanship that goes into making the bespoke repair panels is amazing. It just amazing how rusty these cars can become. I also have contacted previous owners and like you say they all fondly remember the cars. Keep the update coming.
Kind regards

Good stuff Garry, great that you are hands-on with the process.

It'll be interesting seeing Chesterton's work. I've pottered around their website a few times, and along with Bray's and Sportwagen, they must be just about the best in the business. Could certainly show the Porsche's own restoration department a thing or two. It's been particularly interesting looking at their coachbuilding projects as well.

Thanks Barry,

Some equally impressive work being carried out on John’s 2.2E I would say :)
