I'll admit I do like to exercise the engine

Bizarrly though, high revs actually helped because it keeps some tension in teh chains. Its at the low revs when the chain slaps about & risks jumping on the cam gear.

In this case looks like some one used a bolster chisel

I guess it's Porsche dealer for a new one, although IIRC there's a special crow-foot/ring spanner + another to hold the cam still so maybe best left alone.
How much play should be in the chains because the tensioner has about 3mm of 'back lash'

You don't need to wait until the tensioner collapse to do something. It's better to rebuild them every 50000 km or so.
The rebuild kit is only around £20.

Its pretty easy too.

I like that -Going to open the other housing today but not expecting to see a copy as the motor looks like it only has had some work on the right side.

Update :

Long Block is back together. We are now just waiting for the tinware to arrive back from the powder coaters.

Throttle bodies had a small crack around one of the mounting flanges. this has been welded up by a specialist & the bodies are now going for heat treatment.

One CV joint had a broken race. I have now replaced this & cleaned / overhauled the rest.

Plan is to have everything back together & the car running for 19th May which will give me a couple of days prior to Scotland
