Many years ago, i tried to persuade a London firm to retain my services with an old car for abt £7500 instead of modern company car, in question a 3 0 rs , kinda explained they d never loose and hopefully i d buy it back when i cud.............they declined, i went elsewhere for work................earnt enough to buy my own, the rest is history !!

James, what you say does makes sense but only if the bull market in the '73 RS continues.
If it collapses as it did before then the £65k S could revert to £20k.
This is a luxury market so it is not inherently stable if there is
an economic downturn as looks rather possible at the moment.
I am just being cautious as I well remember the last time.

What James said was echoed to me by my accountant recently. I was looking at leasing a 997 Turbo and she larfed a lot and said "watch the residuals dive on these cars..." Similarly when approached about the 997 Targa, (which we have now backed out of, which is why I am looking at a more 'fun' car) she opined that that the dealers might be making the RRP's up, because they would have no reflection on the cars residual value as soon as it rolled out of the showroom.

I must admit though I am getting a little cold-feety about the upward creep of prices. Over 200k is bonkers, and I'm definitely more comfortable with a ceiling of 175k. But this is tempered by the fact that I do want to own a 'correct' slice of history in RS form......hmmm! I can wait, and I'm not going to panic about getting it for CLM.

its a difficult one, the more perfect the car, the higher the price and the less inclined you may be to use the thing. not using any machine leads to expensive and time consuming fettling should you decide to use the car and then discover everything has stopped working...

If you are concerned about boom and bust, I guess like artwork or shares, classic cars are equity, over time the trend for blue chips is up. You just have to ignore the cyclical nature of price action. Picking bottoms, as they say, leads to smelly fingers. If its an investment, maybe you take the view the UK economy is headed South and you wait. If its a passion, then put one hand on your wallet, the other on your crutch, and lift the offer.

Personally, I'm looking forward to using mine on the Three Castles Rally in June, any damage i can put down to patina, and besides, a race history will add 20% to its value

Great post!

I do feel for the dealers who are attempting to sell an RS that hasn't been raced, or doesn't have 'history.' There are going to be more of the "...and James Hunt walked past it twice at Monaco commenting that he thought this was the car that was Prince Rainiers..." type descriptions.

I think I am of the type that having paid for the thing then I will use it. Having said that I should be able to think up something for the history if I prang it, heaven forfend!

I'm less worried about paying market price, as I am about a seller knowing that I will and lobbing 30k on top. I want to find the seller that won't let it go until he/she knows that it is going to a good home. If the seller doesn't ask me about my garage, or which air box thingy I'm going to use, then I'm losing interest in them. This doesn't help the dealers I know, but unless I get a strong personal lead or recommendation about a car, I'm not that interested at first. This probably comes over as arrogant, but I don't mean it to.

The other thing that makes me less twitchy about coughing up the necessary is the feeling that I'm buying into a group of people that really love the cars for what they are. It'll be nice when somebody rolls up somewhere and says; "Oh you bought the such-and-such car, known it for years, had an eye on it myself, lovely car..." Very halcyon daysy' I know.

So I reckon it might be the lifting and crutch-grabbing I'll be doing!

I don't know if you've seen this car but looks like the perfect car for you on Edmond Harris website - RS Lightweight M471 in Orange - full restoration just about completed, sounds like it's got a good history - I can't imagine they come much better than this - in fact I might consider trading my Touring for it !!!!! (only joking!)

I've seen it during the build up. I posted some pics of it the other day as my silver car was in the workshop where it is being built up. I also know the previous owner very well if you require any further info let me know.

The orange one seems to have hit new highs(price wise) as Vic says - from the pictures looks like it could be as good as the 0024 car restored at Fresingers !
A rare M471, the colour you want, good history , fully restored , in the UK from a guy with an excellent reputation ! it all fits - where are you going to find another one ? ( at any price!)
