Just a very minor update but, for me, a significant one ...

- after over 12 months of searching involving hundreds of hours of scouring the internet, I finally managed to find a pair of original NOS rear reflectors in Germany !

This wasn't something that was holding the project up in any way but it had become a bit of an obsession I'm embarassed to say - especially since nobody else was likely to have noticed.

Anyway, here they are - I'm still not 100% certain what vehicle they were fitted to back in the early '60's but it certainly wasn't something particularly common!






Funnily enough the one I had found ~ 6 months ago, although very, very similar, wasn't in fact 100% correct - those above are identical to the ones originally fitted to 904's.

I'm glad to have finally located these - it was something that had really been bugging me ...

There has been a bit of a hold up for the past couple of months due to Barrie having to find a new supplier for the (very difficult to find) oval steel tubing needed for the front & rear wisbones & further problems caused by the inability of the laser-cutters to read/interpret the dimensional drawings correctly ...

Thankfully these problems have now been overcome & the fabrication of the front & rear suspension is underway.

Here's Barrie's jig to hold the front upper wishbone components for welding:

There were still a few parts on my (thankfully dwindling) 'wanted' list including a second original '60's Talbot Berlin mirror to match the one I already had.

Unforunately, over the past couple of years, these mirrors have risen in price significantly, but perseverance (& my in-built reluctance to pay 'over the odds') eventually turned up a good used pair (for 'sensible' money) with the right degree of 'patina' in Germany:




The dash switch layout I had chosen copied the original simple set-up but I was unhappy with the mis-match of bezels - particularly the rather 'drab' ones on the Bosch (356A) ignition switch & the twin-plug ignition circuit isolators:



so I ordered some original 356B chrome bezels from Stoddard in the US & swapped them over:

















The final layout looks far more 'harmonious' ... to me anyway !

Those bezels look much nicer , as you say positively harmonious. Love the fab work for the wishbones and uprights, really excellent stuff

I wanted to use something which looked more 'period-correct' for the oil catch tank/breather (rather than a modern aluminium one) but it was very difficult to find a 904 with an original-looking set-up.

The only 6-cylinder Factory model I'd seen which still retained this feature was Irvine Laidlaw's that utilised a similar catch tank to the 911R & early ST models ... a swb 911 plastic washer bottle - so I decided to copy that.

It was mounted between the chassis & gearbox so I needed to fabricate a suitable retaining bracket from aluminium (after making a suitable pattern/template from cardboard):

a bit OT, but as my knowledge of fabrication is poor, how are those big radiuses made?

I don't have any sophisticated equipment at home so I use an electric 'nibbler' to cut the external shape out of aluminium sheet & a file for final smoothing.

The large diameter hole was made using a hole saw mounted in a pillar drill.

There is a differance in those mirrors, can you live with that, with your eye for detail??
