One disappointment on the build sheet was the interior code box. This was left blank. This box is the one furthest right on the second line down on the build sheet. For such an obviously special interior we were expecting a code 99xx which is i think is well know as the code for prototype interiors for model year 69.

The known Versuch 69 S on the previous list resides in South Africa with modified bodywork

The suspense is doing me no good at all!
But I suppose that this is how you got the information yourselves.... bit by bit over a much longer time period

At this point it is worth summarising where we are up to

What makes this car special? What else did the build sheet reveal.
The car has a build date of June 68
01 chassis number
01 engine number
Factory 'works' build number
One of the first three factory lwb 'versuch' prototypes for 69
Originally lhd for six months
Held at the factory for testing the new lwb model two months before launch
Converted by the factory to rhd for a special customer
Paint tag carries the original factory prototype chassis number
'birth certificate' confirms all numbers and 'versuch' status

When we do a car for a 'special customer' it tends to be the same person...begins with a 'P' I think :)

He has a thing for bespoke interior colours... and the first car of type.

This is the conundrum which faced us next. Brendan and I were faced with a hand written portion of the build sheet which had the name of what we thought was the first owner's name and address and had the car converted to RHD by the factory. It took us a long time to work this out. Magnifying glasses, bright lights, were used to crack what was written. The build sheet for our car, cropped down revealed the first three 'users'

WE for works
VERSUCH for works prototype
PGB
? And who else

I will leave you pondering this. First person up with the full name and address and Brendan has promised a drink or two at CLM as a wee prize

More tomorrow..............
