I agree Mike. But this is meant to be a cooking motor and I simply don't want the trouble or to be frank the additional expense. I know that sounds a bit short sighted but If I spend it all on this motor I won't ever afford my 2.8.

I'll run it up and if the pressures look ok that'll be it for a while. If its a knocking old nail I'll cut my losses and flog it with the refurbed top end new chains and ramps fasteners cam towers and cams etc and plow whatever I get back into the 2.8 . It is a 7R case so thats something :?

I was in a similar position in the summer - it's a gamble but so far has paid off - I've done 3 oil changes since it went back together again. I'm working on similar principal - medium term plan is to build another engine so this has to last until that one comes along
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young but I'm just backdated yeah

While waiting for a replacement valve I rebuilt the heads I do have valves for. Seats have been re-cut, valves re-faced . A light kiss with some grinding paste , set up spring lengths to correct tolerance !!! and re-assembled. All refitted to the motor.

You can also see the set of stepped studs I had to make and the welding to save the exhaust stud fixing points. This was originally done with the motor assembled so its nice to see how effective the repair has been

I also un-plugged and removed the cam carrier spray bars to clean properly I don't want a repeat of the journal damage I found in the originals. This is a simple job if you've got a drill press and I can machine some small alloy plugs to re-seal when its put back.

Hoping to organise some cams this week so this interim motor should be ready within a month .......

HI Andy
the plugs are available from Porsche 901 105 379 00 and £0.70p each and they seal first time and do not stretch the cam carrier, you may like to check your valve springs are on the correct way up, as some look upside down?

Thanks Mike I'll get some of hose plugs not worth making at that price.

Have I made an elementary error with the springs I didn't know or look for a correct way up ???

Hi Andy

The inner spring can be fitted either way but the outer spring is progressive, i.e. the coils are wound tighter at one end than the other. Porsche did this to reduce reciprocating mass, the tighter coils should be fitted to the base i.e. the non moving end leaving the lighter end of the spring at the valve stem.

See Mr Bainbridge I do listen occasionally.

Checked..and indeed the "sage of the lakes was correc"t . It was a little "challenging" putting right my mistake since the heads are bolted to the cylinders now but a little creative thinking mean't I could remove the collets hold the valve turn the offending springs and recompress to fit the collets. Too embarrased to post pictures of the method but it worked 8)

I couldn't find any refrence to this feature of the assembly in the usual places so thanks again Mike. Its been said before but these little details and free gratis advice make this site such a great place.

Watch this space for more self inflicted suffering.

Hi Tim, ..I did say self inflicted suffering. Alan from Canford Classics came over yesterday to have a look and a chat. His input is always worth listening to.

I nearly sold it all but the kids and Alan kept me focussed... I need to refocus on my 2.8 motor to give the car the engine it deserves even if it takes a bit longer and as Alan says the "right " motor makes a big difference to saleability. ( Ultimately)

So I intend to sell the refreshed 2.4 this will aloow me to reposition myself in a fiscal sense to build a proper motor I've waited more than 8 years now I think so whate another 1 or 2.

So looking for a buyer for the 2.4 as a long motor with no induction or exhaust possibly even no cams if I can't find aset at the right price soon!!!

OK, I fully understand. I dropped a "shopping" 2.2T in my Targa, just so I had the impetus to finish. I too must have dwelled over the "For sale" advert, partially written numerous times.
I intend to build a twin spark 2.4, but with the car now running and useable, will probably end up waiting a year (Or more).
CLM 2014 isn't too far away :)

Well the 2.4 is gone... I have a couple of jobs for other folk to do to move my best engine forward so though I'd tackle some of the detail jobs I've been meaning to address.

I knocked up these alloy parts for the fire extinguisher mounts and nozzles plus the dual fuel pumps, master cylinders and tank access. Ready for black anodise this week.

Its all progress and quite fun . I've also found some great lightweight carpet to fit. Have a google "megavanmats" they will also make lovely edge bound floor mats to patterns.

All those shiny bits are now anodised black and fitted. I'll take a snap of the finished installations later.

I have been working on my own fuel recirculation manifold a la PMO so I can have a fuel return to the tank when the pump is working at 3 PSI but there is no demand and to prevent any heat induced vapour lock. It also tidies up the routing of fuel piping in the engine space.

Soon to be anodised black too :)

It has a fuel inlet on the top left, a gauge fitting ( regulator is in the luggage space) two outlets on the front for the carbs and a return leak off on the bottom left. This pipe has an orifice plate inside the hose tail to allow a controlled leak off. The PMO device uses a needle valve here to effectively control pressure but this is simpler and I had a filter king regulator already plus the fuel lines through the car will only see regulated pressure not pump outlet pressure which is a minor safety improvement.
