Hit a major snag tonite. The cookin 2.4 was running ( I saw the video footage) I thought a comp test might be a good idea before I bolted it in...............so I found zero compression on two cylinders Now this was cold and only measured using the gauge and me turning the motor over via the crank bolt but zero is zero I will check with a little oil in the bores to seal the rings tommorow but I don't hold out much hope.
I know I should have done this earlier and I attach no blame to anyone but myself for being too optomistic. I have a suspicion I may have caused the problem since when timing the cams the clamp I used to hold the left hand tension on slipped and the cam snapped round under load from the valve springs...
Anyway I have a clean warm garage to work in so this engine too will get a top end overhaul and new rings... at least its adding value and a degree of security.
Wonder if anyone has a set of 2.4 S pistons might be worth swapping "while I'm in there" famous last word....

Well all it needs is a top end overhaul the valves were being held off with carbon disturbed my some mechanism.Piston tops are a bit "cokey". So no great worry.
Might be worth fitting some 2.2 pistons if I can find an in spec set. and possibly some s type cams . At least now it will have new chains, ramps and piston rings together with recut valves etc and a "reseal" at the least.
Every cloud has a silver lining.

Few snaps .sneaky peak of the scheme and a couple of the cooking motor getting a new lease of life with new chains and ramps a reseal and a top end overhaul after I found a distinct lack of compression;

.... found the RHS cam had been starved of oil and trashed the front journal
so I'm hunting for a cam carrier and a pair of replacement bumpy sticks.
OR a sleeve for the cam carrier and some hard chrome and grinding on the cam.
Anyone with any parts let me know

looks great ... one observation though you could buy a 1969 period correct reg plate ( or what ever year you feel the car is being built to suit ) & transfer it to the car for little money ........ you'll then be unlikely to get pulled for having black plates on a '73 & later car
Sladey, thanks an idea of price to replace would be great.
Regarding plates yes I know and its on my radar

A careful inspection tonite suggests I may get away with polishing the damaged journal ( damage is limited to circumfrential grooves about the middle of the journal) and replacing the cam tower to fit it in a new bearing surface.
I'm chasing a new cam tower right now !!
I'll post a snap of the damage later for reference

Heres the top end problem and some snaps of the honed cylinders installed and valve seat refacing in the garage.
So both cam towers have had it due to some debris getting into the bearing areas( I think I've got a new pair coming from a fellow DDK'er) thanks.
The search is back on for a pair of cams T/E/S (other suitable) ?

Well thanks to some great DDK help ( 210bhp and impmad2000) the cam towers are here the cams are pending, weather has delayed delivery, but I stand a chance of a christmas re-assembly job .
Jack Daniels allowing
I droppped the valves off for refacing at a local auto shop today so its all good.
Watch this space ...might even be a bit more cosmetic progress too.
Thanks again
PS whats the timing figure for e cams ?

Hi Andy, just been re-reading this thread about your latest top end problems and hate to mention it but, with
the level of damage to the cam tower are you sure you should not be looking in the bottom end as well.
Unlike inside the barrel where as long as the piston ring is intact any debris is contained, the oil system in
the cam tower if contaminated could well carry metal particles around the entire engine.
cheers, Mike.
