Paul, a question (I'm up to page 38 and haven't been sacked - by myself - just yet), the panels you get from Porsche, ie. pukka Porsche parts - sorry for the illiteration, are they galvanised as they would have been from the factory (I guess '74s wouldn't have been, but you know what I mean) or are they just sprayed and sent ?? And if not, did you hot dip them - I know I should just read on !!!

New panels from Porsche have the part number suffixed with GRV, which means they are galvanised as well as being Ecoated.

I’ve been carefully reading many threads on DDK regarding the topic of tyres. And more specifically: best tyres for an RS?
Which led me to a broad consensus that the Avon is what you need wrapped around your rim.

And that – rather fortuitously – is what I’d already settled on.
My personal choice was driven by a car I’d seen fitted with those tyres. It was an RS rep put together by Nick and it looked mighty fine.

I felt they filled the arches well, the sidewall bulge looked just right and they had the period correct high profile.
Furthermore the tread pattern was suitably ‘classic’ yet manufactured with modern compounds.
I don’t think it’s a tyre you buy with a regard to longevity or quietness but if you value performance over tyre wear then you’d be well advised to consider the Avon CR6ZZ.

I thought of the Avon CR6ZZ as a road tyre but the manufacturer considers them to be a motorsport tyre that is road legal.
So, that’s a good place to start.

They claim they are a competition tyre engineered for classic cars.
To quote Avon, the tyres are “suited to many of the faster classic cars like the classic AC Cobra and fantastic Ford GT40”.
Probably OK for the humble 911 too....

They have superb wet weather performance combined with high levels of grip in the dry.
All in all, an excellent tyre for rallying or track-days. Or Sunday afternoon trips to the pub.

The standard fitment for a ’74 Carrera would have been 185/70x15 on the front and 215/60x15 on the rears.
The same specification as Porsche used on the ’73 RS.

As I understand it this combination of tyre sizes was the same irrespective of whether fitted to 6” & 7” rims or 7” & 8” rims.
And those are the tyres I’ve selected (to be fitted – in my case – on ‘sevens & eights’).

Interestingly the Avon's are exempt from the current EU labelling and are ostensibly designed only for cars first registered before 1990.

Will you track it Paul, given the superlative amount of effort getting it just right, not just a concourse car ?

Don't get me wrong, whats the point in spending all that money if your not going to cane the arse off it ??? But maybe.....

A lot of the historic racers run those tyres I think, 911's to GT40.
Be interesting to read how you find them.

We have a bit of salt on our roads already in the West Midlands...

After all this work and commitment, not sure I could drive it like I've stolen it...
