here's a pic of engine, Bruce

Image

on with smugglers box....decided to make a little opening in the base so i could bolt up a plate to carry exhaust from Webasto, drain from fresh air blower duct and anything else that needed an exit

Image

the hole you see just forward and to one side of the opening is to inject anti-rust fluid in the suspension cross member stabiliser mounting....i'll do the same the other side

also drilled hole in other mounting

Image

for same reason

i now have a reasonably rust-free shell....onto the painting

Hi Adrian , if the picture of the engine you put up is your engine, it looks suspiciously like a Porsche engine...

Yup, doesn't look like a type4 to me.

That's a 616 engine not a type 4 vw. Also it looks like a small generator so could be an earlier motor.

oh dear....strangely, i'm a bit disappointed.....i was hoping it was a nice big (2 litre) cheap-to-maintain, easy to fuel inject type 4....its definitely got a 1976-typical number on the rear engine cover

Ok, who is going to offer to trade Adrian a Vw motor for his Porsche one?

nice one....

i'll sort out the mystery motor some other time

i decided to cheat a bit on the painting....(the body's complaining)....so i didn't strip the roof, it was perfect, and the red paint came off easily in the awkward areas (door shuts etc)

so first thing was to strip and repaint the vulnerable areas, bottoms of window reveals, wheelarch lips, cill undersides etc in Epoxy Mastic, that gives them more protection

then put up my 20 quid spray booth and stripped rear wings, front and rear scuttles etc.....amazingly, hardly any dents and no rust

Image

Image

the only blot was that the right hand wing had been replaced and the weld join was well sunk below finished level, but there was no rust at all and it looked an excellant repair, so i painted the weld area with Epoxy Mastic, then filled on top

then i applied phosphoric acid etch to stripped areas

thats me upto date now....tomorrow is epoxy primer day

Love the spray booth, 10/10 from me.

What did you use to remove the paint?
I've just bought some 'really good' stripper from the local car paint shop. Smells like Nitromores and about as effective as the modern stuff from Halfords...

i use 3M clean n strip discs, (mounted in angle grinder for the bulk of it, then drill-mounted disc for the fiddly bits) purple ones XT-DC, followed by 80 grit all over by hand

2 good coats of epoxy primer went on successfully....pics to follow

That's a lot of hard work.
I thought you might have used Nitromores etc to get most off.
Keep it coming, love a real DIY restoration.

justa few pics of primer

Image

there's not much room in there

this is my spray gear

Image

easy to store away....this'll be my fourth respray with it

i've decided to stick with the origianl colour, tangerine....i'm not a tangerine-type person but thought i'd probably knock £5K off its value, if i did it in any other colour

meanwhile, stripped both doors and engine lid....again hardly any rust or dents

Image

those were the only bits

then gave them a good soaking with phosphoric acid

Image

and

Image

looks like Saturday might be THE day....top coat....plenty of tengerine-peel expected!
