Thanks for this, am mid way through exactly the same process.
I think my wiring loom had an issue at some point, and they ran a bunch of single core wires through the cockpit to replace it. Hopefully ill find the extra wire in the original wires.
I can def recommend spending some money on one of those laminated wiring diagrams available on ebay etc, they are much better than the online diagram for a c you found, and worth every penny....

Roy and others. If I am following this, the idea is to make the large amber become the turn flasher light and the small red the brake light and running light(tail light). Is this what is being done? Also, I have heard that the Italian lens has small amber and large red(reverse of rest of Euro lenses, but have never seen a picture of one.
Thanks - Phil Planck

Yes, Phil, that's the plan. I have heard of the Italian lenses, but like you, have never seen a picture of one, so the chances of tracking a pair down would be remote.

As a bit of a post script, I found the black and purple wire under the dash that runs from the brake light switch to the turn signal switch, and usefully, it has a bullet connector. So by unplugging this, and making up a short length of cable with two male bullet connectors, I plugged one end into the black and purple wire, and the other end into the spare, unused five way bullet connector, which now has been pressed into service running to the brake lights, and presto! It all works as intended.

I purchased a very reasonably priced 6v electronic flasher relay (3 pin) which works as advertised (see other thread), but needed the wires re-ordering into the connector, and it now works fine, but doesn't have a feed for the indicator warning lamp.

So, a little inginuity is going to be required to make that bit work, or maybe it would be simpler to just buy the proper 6v flasher unit? For some reason, the tin can flasher relay which came with the car illuminates the flasher warning lamp constantly when the ignition is on, then flashes when you turn on the indicators! Most odd!

Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone, it keeps you going when the car is trying to discourage you!

I recently went through the process of switching from US-spec all-red rear lamps to Euro-spec versions so thought I'd add my comments to this thread.

I searched around the rear of the car looking for the 'spare' wire & eventually found it tucked up (& taped) underneath the car behind the engine compartment.

On checking the continuity I found, as previously mentioned by others, that the other end of the wire terminated at the 6-way connector block under the dash. There were only 5 wires connected, the 'empty' terminal being opposite the end of this 'spare' wire.

Thus unplugging the black/mauve wire from brake light switch up at the indicator switch & plugging it into the 'empty' terminal at the 6-way connector completed the feed to the rear of the car (for the brake lights).

I then used a double 'bullet' connector sleeve to split this feed to the 2 rear lamps.

I had previously bought some new Euro-spec rear lamps on German ebay but was surprised to find that these also only had single filament bulb holders for the inner (red) lights.

Rather than cut/modify the lamp units to accept twin-filament bulb holders for the stop/tail lights, I found some spare twin-filament terminal inserts (the small circular discs with 2 wires attached) & fitted these along with 5w/21w non-offset pin bulbs - never knew that these existed before !

Everything works perfectly with the added benefit of using 95% Factory wiring.
