Re: Boring old Tyres - 59 356a
I'd buy the Michelin: you're entire car rests on a rubber contact patch of four square inches, so it is false economy to nickel and dime on tyres. Michelins are expensive because they're the best tyre - why wouldn't you put the best tyre on the best postwar sports car? Just my view but I've michelins on all my road cars and they are a delight. The other reason for them is they perform and don't wear out: I have a set on my 2.2S that get spanked every time I drive the car and six years on they still look like new.

The last time I changed tyres on the 912 I got Vredestein T-TRAC. Little bit cheaper than the classis but seemed like much the same quality of tyre save for the looks.Midlifecrisis wrote:Maybe buy some Vredestein Sprint Classics, a modern tyre that looks like a classic, that's what I have on my car.

+1 too
I also used http://www.event-tyres.co.uk/. They will come around to your place ( even Saturday morning) and fit them! Nice price and service. They have the Sprint Classics plus other makes if that is what you want.

Re: Boring old Tyres - 59 356a
I was at the Oldtimer GP at the Nurburgring a couple of years ago & lost count of the number of cars I saw on Vredestein Sprint Classics. When I sold my old Samba the guy who bought it off me insisted on them so he had 4 sent over from Germany. That bus was the surest footed stock height bus I ever drove.
Can't honestly comment on the Michelins but my A handles amazingly well on the Sprints.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated
Next challenge is to find either a set of either Vredestein Sprints or Michelin XAS in the Sydney area, a real shame that Longstone Tyres have now stopped their 'free' international delivery service.

Re: Boring old Tyres - 59 356a
After much thought and discussion, I went for the Michelin XAS. I had a long chat with the Michelin guy at Castle Hedingham - after I'd already bought the tyres - and was pleased then that I had made the right decision. I agree with Steve - I think we underestimate what a difference to ride and handling a tyre can make. Just sayin'!

We've got Vredestein Sprint Classics on our 356B historic rally car (5.5" rims) and a spare set of Snow+'s mounted on the original rims. They are great wet & dry, highly recommended.

Hi!
I have had really good luck with some of the Korean/budget tires around these days. Kumho-Summit-Capitol etc. I currently have them on 356-912-911 etc. The difference between high and low end tires doesn't seem to be as great as it once was. Although, nothing looks better than a Michelin XZX! Keith

Re: Boring old Tyres - 59 356a
I ended up with a set of Nankang CX668 tyres, the only brand I could quickly get my hands on in Oz over Xmas - after 1500 miles turned out to be a surprisingly good tyre albeit not a natural choice.
