I seem to recall spot checks by the police on the way up to resorts in france - I think you will have to carry a set of chains. It all depends where the snowline is! Oh and don't put the chains in the boot under all of your luggage and then get caught out in heavy snow having to unload all of your luggage into the road at 3500m like I did!
