It must a german engine thing, the VW type 4 motor has a sneaky hidden M8 nut that stops the crankcase halves coming apart too Grrrrrr

Well some bits in the crankcase like in this picture

Interestingly, you can see a casting flaw on one web, and a small piece let in on the adjacent web. I guess this is original factory
Most of the main bearings look fine like this

But the flywheel end bearing and its thrust faces are not so healthy.

and the auxilliary shaft bearings too

Looks like you just caught the bearings just in time before they did any serious damage! 8)

This thread is brilliant.

One day I will do this. In the living room. And my girlfriend will hate me.

But I won't care.

One day I'll finish this :)
Project currently stalled. I need cash !
My plan is to get the crank measured, buy bearings if available, and then wait till I've finished the rest of the car.
When the rest of the car is finished, then perhaps, I'll be able to justify spending the money on the engine :( !
If I do the engine now, I will have to cheapskate on things and I really don't want to do that. If I can make a good job of the rest of the car, then I hope to build the engine that will do the shell proud. (High Comp 2.4 or something like :) )
