Wow that engine really does sound like a weapon. It's bit difficult to hear over the air but revs very freely. What have you created Jamie!

Just of numpty questions. Where are the heat exchanges? You seem to have a oil filter where they would normally be? The oil filter seems a bit low? Why are the wheels turning slowly?

The heat exchangers are there, as normal. The oil filter is remote system that runs from a cover on the pump - is a common modification on VW engines.

The filter is actually higher than the bottom of the engine, and is out of the firing line of the rear wheel. Should be perfectly safe.

I've never seen a car that doesn't rotate the driveshafts when in neutral and jacked up!

Rear bumper is on, including aluminium overriders, which look the business.

Throttle cable is attached. Have ordered a stronger return spring.

Clutch cable is attached. Started the car in gear last night and nearly deconstructed my fibreglass front bumper. Too many years of not having any drivetrain attached...

Oil catch tank is on - attached to the firewall. It's one of those cheapo Bugpack-style ones and it came with the car. The Dude despised it, but after wasting money trying out two more expensive catch tanks, it became obvious that it was the best size and had the best pipe inlet configuration for the job. It's hidden behind the fan shroud.

911 oil pressure sender has been ordered and is on its way to a friend's place in LA. For now I'll use the idiot light.

Today I plan to fit the front pan and steering rack tie brackets, attach the heater cables with the bits that just arrived from Rose Passion, and try to work out why the brake lights don't work, and why the horn isn't working when it did a few days ago.

After this I need to book an MOT!

Great progress, Jamie! The beast lives.

On the oil pressure sender front, VDO made 0-5bar and 0-10bar enders, with and without idiot light terminal. They're easy to buy in the UK – all over eBay. I'd advise you to get one before driving it – idiot light only comes on when it's too late.

The camera on my phone has gone from poor to dreadful - scratched-up and stuff. I just destroy phones...

Progress so far - the front crossmember tie arm things are on. The horn works again. The heater controls are connected.

Balanced the carbs left to right. Found the RH carb is still leaking very slightly :(

I went to fit the Pertronix kit I have, and it's not the right one for my distributor...

The front undertray thing is also incorrect - I have the one from my old steel 912 crossmember and it doesn't fit the SC aluminium crossmember. Just heading back out to see if it can be modified to fit.

Brake lights are operational. I have both a pressure switch and mechanical switch, so I moved the wiring to the mechanical switch and am going to ignore the pressure-driven one.

The horn relay was wired wrong, which is odd because I swear it worked the other day. Fixed now!

I decided to try lowering the rear and inch or so, since I fitted the trailing arms at the wrong angle. Took five degrees off the RH side then realised now would be a good time to also tighten-up my driveshaft bolts. I had left them loose as I had one missing.

I fitted the new one, and then started to tighten the others. One wouldn't go in, so after ten minutes of messing around I removed the shaft and discovered there was the snapped end of a bolt in the gearbox flange. What the f***?

It was easy to drill out, and I reattached the driveshaft. Then I started to tighten the bolts on the outboard end and discovered another snapped bolt.

I drilled that one out, too. Then, as I was tightening the remaining bolts, another one snapped.

I'm not sure what's going on here. I read somewhere that zinc plating can make metal brittle, and these had all be zinc plated... Whatever the reason, I'm going to order a whole new set of bolts before the car goes anywhere near the road.

In other news, I appear to have lost my 1968-only (I think) rear view mirror. ARGHHH.

Plated bolts need cooked at 200C for many hours, I believe,

Max might have a 68 rear mirror but would be nicer to find yours
