I'll probably have to concede that one as it wouldn't have left the factory like that,
it's something that the teams would have done before it raced.
Having said that it still not what you're looking for........

Good guess Andy and again like above you're right as it's not what it left the factory with, but not what we are looking for here.
The racing teams changed them to flexible as they are much quicker to move around if you are working on the car changing
pumps and injection manifolds and so on.

The breather pipe's not on yet, so what you can see is the injection pump support bracket, as the pumps
mounted on rubber bushes, and the oil pressure sender unit turned on it's side with a special adapter to
clear the bracket. All standard RSR stuff.
Keep looking!

Mike:
I wonder whether the tall horns had the plastic type covers in the day...it seems they had vinyl/fabric covers on each bank as shown with Mark Donahue looking over spare engines for the Penske RSR.

Hi Nick, if you mean the cold start lever on the injection pump, then that is how the racing pump came from the factory.
Sometimes people run a cable from it into the cabin to the hand throttle lever, but it involves a bracket on the pump which
looks crap and they don't work very well anyway.
Thought this would be spotted in minutes so a clue...if you excuse the pun....Nick's getting warm

Interesting one that Gib, I'm not sure if one or the other were specifically factory or not, I'll make some inquiries.
Your picture is one of my favorite reference works, but I just wonder if there are some US modifications there,
for instance never seen a picture in Europe of a fan with the brown coating and the same with the lightweight
exhaust hanger with the holes which I love, looks like a oversize 917 part!
By the way going back to the vinyl covers, I've had a set made which we use in the workshop, Neil loves them
on the trumpets as they're somewhere to put your spanners when working on the engine!

Hi Mike, no it's an engine oil circulating pump very heavily modified to RSR racing spec.
What you can't actually see in the picture is where the pump oil breather hose is, it's
a pretty clever solution as a standard pump hose would be very noticeable coming out
on the right side.
So, still looking for the unusual part in there............

I’m very sure all of you gents know a GREAT deal more than I do on these marvellous machines, but just a guess... maybe hydraulic tensioners weren’t original?

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the post. You are absolutely right, original RSR's did not have hydraulic chain tensioners
which is why mine doesn't, what you can see are the pipes to the oil fed cams, sorry!
Can't believe nobodies spotted it, here's the picture again
