Like I said, it needs to be fed through from the rear, but you can't use the old cable to pull the new cable through because of all the sheath/plastic covering. When you've done it once, you'll see what I mean. And probably learn new swear words.

I've done it two or three times and not had it get caught up on the clutch cable once (as everybody warns), but there's always a first time for everything...

The new cable arrived this morning but I decided to lubricate the current one and use. I've decided this car has been sitting for too long and needs to be used more.

I've refitted the chrome on the windscreen. Then filled up with petrol. Set the tyre pressures and thrashed it for a bit.

Next issue to fix is the fuel level.

Can someone tell me where the oil pressure sender is? Is it possible to fit a pressure sender in its place?

The oil pressure sender is on top of the crankcase on the right (passenger) side of the engine, close to the distributor. When you say 'Is it possible to fit a pressure sender in its place?', do you mean a pressure gauge sender? If so, the answer is yes and no. You'll need to use a remote sender conversion as there is not enough space to fit the bulky VDO-style sender unit within the tinware. You can use a simple straight extension piece that screws into the crankcase which allows the sender unit to be mounted above the cooling tin, but conventional wisdom on this is that it's a bad idea as vibration eventually leads to the fitting loosening, or even cracking at the end of the male thread that screws into the case. The best solution is to use a flexible hose screwed into the case, with an adaptor fitting on the end to take the sender unit. This sort of thing...

The thread is M10 x 1 not 1/8NPT (which is close and sort of fits...). As used on VW and early BMW...

This week I'm going to try and get the fuel gauge working

I've found this thread

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/lofiversio ... 72926.html

The gauge never goes below half but the red reserve light comes on when the tank is about nearly empty. However, under zero power the fuel gauge does move to zero

I guess the first stage is

Ya got an ohm meter? Hold the sender up-right and take the reading (Empty value) Turn it up-side down take a reading (Full value)

I had the same on my 914/6. Nine times out of ten, it's the result of the contacts in the sender unit corroding slightly, or getting coated with residue from modern petrols. Try just disassembling the sender unit and gently (very gently) clean the two long thin wires with a little solvent or even just your finger nail. Also check the float moves freely up and down when you tilt the sender unit. All the ohm meter really tells you is what you already know: the sender isn't working the way it should...

New VDO tube-type sender units are readily available as they are used a lot in motorsport where foam-filled tanks mean you can't use a float-type sender. Demon Tweaks stock them (they come in various lengths) or there's here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/383861356683

Sender looks, from the outside, pretty good and still has the 914 mark. The float moves freely. Seems to be 40mm diameter and 280mm long.

I think I will order a new one.

Well the new sender arrived very quickly. It's a about 4mm shorter. Which means that I should never run out of fuel. Also it has a different connectors from the factory one and no circuit for the red light.

I might try to disassemble/clean the factory one first before cutting wires. I had a quick go before but the the tiny nut wouldn't come loose.

have you tried measuring the resistance of the old one and wether it changes as the float moves up & down ?

Yes it does because the gauge moves but you are right I should measure before cutting anything

.

If you haven't already done so Neil it's worth reading Paul Madden's old thread here:

/\ /\ Great thread from Paul. When I fixed mine, it was before the age of digital cameras, so nothing ever got recorded!
