Hi from new member (911 and Spyder)

Post by Sundance4 »

Hi

met a few of you ddk guys at classic lemans, and thought ......
This is a bit more like it....

did the porsche club a few years ago and frankly wasn't up for the discussions on polish (we really did have a special evening on polish)....I realise its not all like that but....it just all seemed too.....grown up for me.

Anyway...42, married with kids, architect (yeah, yeah I know ...grown up)

Grew up with the smell of Castrol R...... (lots of vintage cars)

I have had a few 914's which I think are great....and I miss 'em.

I now run an outlaw 2.2E in silver as my everyday driver. (I dont own anything more sensible)
2.7 euro pistons and cylinders, 915 close ratio box, anti roll bars, strut brace, S recaro seats, S brakes and wheels etc etc

and about 15 to the gallon........good job its on it's third lifetime (car years equalling 10 human years) and has always run on unleaded.

Anyway my only regret is I didnt buy it 20 years ago.

I'm also scratch building a 550A spyder (for anyone not familiar with spyder history the 550A had a semi-spaceframe chassis in stead of the simpler round tube ladder frame of the 550) . Anyway I flew to Jackson Wyoming to Bill Doyles four Cam Shop where an original car was being completely rebuilt from the ground up and took a lot of photos and measurements.

Bill and his mate Brian were the perfect hosts. (obviously they thought I was a complete nutter - three aeroplanes and half way round the world to measure a car!)

Anyway as you can imagine progress is slow. The chassis is now sitting in my workshop while I fit the suspension befor it goes off to the panel beaters for it's allow body. Plan is to fit a 912 engine on a 741 box for starters. Maybe one day Bill will find be an engine that came out of a spyder.......but who wants to spend 40K on an engine that could pop at any time.

As you guys would say .....I just want to drive the thing....

I hope to get FIA historic papers........
Remember I'm and architect....its the design that counts as far as I'm concerned........it might not be an original porsche but its still a porsche design....and it ought to drive like one

Sketchy as hell I would imagine

anyway .......Hi all

Welcome Sundance4,

Interesting thing that spyder project. David White (mightyspyder on DDK) had one rebuild totally from scratch.

he did send me some pictures but I prefer to let him do the talking, pm me and I can forward you some contact details.

His is all aluminium build- a thing of sheer beauty :drunken: and from what I recall he transported a type IV engine to the USA in three suitcases.

Good luck and welcome to the DDK

Welcome. We may have to set up a west country outpost in the New Year. Seems to be quite a few of us in the Bath/ Bristol/ Gloucester triangle. Doesn't sound like you will have much time for anything else other than building a car from scratch! I did see a 550A replica on Ebay a while ago in Florida. It did look nice and they were certainly producing them to order. Best of luck Rich
