To be brutally honest i don't think Pirelli have put durability at the top of their list of priority when developing compounds. You wouldn't for this type of application whould you?

i had meetings with Pirelli where we discussed compounds i did not asked them to put durability at the top of the list, however i have suggested to them that in a lot of the cases where these tyres are being fitted they will stay on the car for a long time, and a carcass that does not perish quickly is very desirable to our customers. (However that considered; dont use pressure washers, steem cleaners or chemicals when washing tyres)

That considered; it was 2015 when we got Pirelli to make the CN36 tyres for us. Then it was 2016 when Porshe themselves saw what we were doing, and got involved themselves working with Pirelli. Porsche did their testing and homologated them with the N. To be honest i don't know; if at that time Pirelli altered the mix in these tyres.

What i can say catagorically; is that in the last over 8 years we have sold loads of these N homologated CN36 tyres and fitted them to all sorts of cars, and nobody has ever complained about the longevity of the CN36 to any of the staff in our office. (that includes the CN36 pre Porsche involvment)

Do Conti make the righ size tyre for a 912? what size are you fitting? I have found a T rated 165r15 CT22.

But why are classic tyres (CN36, XWX etc) four times more expensive than modern tyres?

Well they aren't. i just fittted some Michelins to the front of my modern BMW and they are over £ 200 each! these are relatively generic tyres. when you get into Ferrari tyres and more obscure sizes the price goes up, till you get to Bugatti Veyron tyres where they are about £ 10K each.

the Cn36 and XWX are:-
top brand tyres
made to the highest specification
obsolete sizes
very low volume (this adds a lot to the cost)
unusual structures copmpared to modern generic tyres
made with the best compouds,
made to the highest quality. etc
