1972 911 2.4S

Post by aircooled »

Hi everyone.

Just recently re-acquired my Tangerine 1972 2.4S. Originally bought it in 1991, took it with me to Hong Kong where I lived at the time, brought it back to the UK in 1996 and then sold it stupidly in 2000 because I needed the cash. Tracked it down and bought it back during lockdown.

Having it back is making me extremely happy!

Can anyone on here tell me how many 2.4S were sold in 1972 and 1973 in the UK and if anyone knows how many of these were tangerine?

Long shot I know but thought I would ask.

My car was sold originally by Glen Henderson in Ayr, Scotland in March 1972. Have tried without success to trace the original owner. I don’t suppose anyone on here would have any thoughts on how to do that? The DVLA said they could not help.

Thanks a lot for any thoughts re the above.

I saw a similar enquiry on PCGB Early 911 Register forum just under a year ago, but about numbers of RHD ‘73 S and Robin Walker, Register Secretary said
“From my records and the Red Book there were 850 F series cars imported by AFN into the UK. AFN were the official importers at that time based in West London.

This is made up of 321 cars with the Chassis number being 9112xxxxxx and 529 cars with their chassis number being 9113xxxxxx, all 'F' series cars.
This number is for all F series cars which include 'T' 'E' 'S' and 'RS' models of which some were Targa models most were Coupe's.”

So, 312 T, E or S Coupe’s (no RHD Targas for ‘72 MY) imported in ‘72, but the follow-on questions of how many of those were in S trim, and of those, how many were Tangerine remain unanswered.

.

There used to be a list - compiled from the AFN archives - giving the RHD model breakdown over the years.

I got a copy from the PCGB Early 911 registrar back in the '80's (can't remember the person's name) but it got mislaid over the years & I didn't really bother as I thought the information was readily available.

I seem to remember that Mark Waring was one of the people who accessed the archives & I think he's got all of the info ...

Thanks for the replies, I do know Mark Waring from long ago so will ask him.

On the Ayr dealership issue this is the Glen Henderson town centre dealership in Beresford Terrace back when it used to sell Ferraris in the 1980’s. The later picture was taken on a visit last year. It’s now a kitchen showroom. I wonder if there are any pictures from when they sold Porsches?

Glen Henderson indeed sold Porsche from that location. Later he moved to an out of town centre location in Heathfield Road. The showroom still exists in another guise now selling Mazda. Glen Henderson himself, now deceased, moved from selling Porsche and Ferrari to Mercedes before finally selling Mazda. Back in the 90’s when it was a Mercedes’ showroom I called to ask if any Porsche records existed as my 73RS at the time was also supplied new by them, the only one registered in Scotland, but alas all records had been destroyed. The only other Porsche franchise back then was Glenvarigill in Westerton, Glasgow but I found no GH records had been transferred there. I think you will be unable to trace anything about your 911 in Scotland now.
If you were to trace any of the first owners I could help as I still live in the area.

Regards
Mike

There were 144 2.4S coupes imported by AFN in 72/73. Sorry, I don’t have each years breakdown nor the colour breakdown.

Mike

Just for interest apparently 8 tangerine S models sold in 1972 from MW's records. I would have thought more but I think there may have been some colour changes over the years.

I owned HMY3K.
A RHD 1972S originally Tangerine (and back to tangerine now; was black when i owned her and even minerva blue in the late 70s !) imported through AFN November 1971. Josh Sadler told me there were 77 RHD S in 72 spec but didn't know how many are left. Mine was chassis ending 0138. I don't know how many rhd 72s were tangerine I'm guessing 10 or fewer

My car is HMP6K chassis ending 0136 registered in October 1971 also a RHD 2.4S so almost a sister to yours John. It was originally 224 Metallic Green and is currently being repainted in that colour having been repainted metallic blue previously. It would be fascinating to find out the colour and specification split of the 77 cars (assuming Josh Sadler is correct as seems likely).
