NOW SOLD

1981 MY Porsche 911 RS Backdate SCW 54L

This 1981 Model Year 911 SC was originally sold in September 1980 by Belfast Porsche agents Isaac Agnew Ltd to future Irish Hillclimb Champion, Ken Noblett, who by habit bought a new white 911 each year! The backdate took place in 2002 by noted RS expert Tony Outridge, who used his experience to create this 2.7 RS Lightweight look. The car was sold to his local pub landlord, who after a couple of years put it up for sale and it made its way to renowned Porsche specialists, Tuthills. They sold it to journalist and Porsche enthusiast, Andrew Frankel. He used the car extensively and reported on it monthly in GT Porsche magazine (Jan 2007-April 2010) and it also appeared in Feb 2007 Motorsport in an article comparing a genuine RS with the RS Rep. Latterly, in 911&Porsche, Dec 2020, Andrew also stated of all the Porsches he had sold he missed the RS Rep the most! The car remained in the Frankel family until it was purchased by the current owned in 2014. The car comes with copies of the relevant magazines plus information from Tony Outridge and Andrew Frankel regarding the car. The current owner has used the car on various Porsche Club Ireland tours.

For the Backdate, Outridge used new steel front wings and long bonnet, complete with fitting the correct slam panel, along with RS spec glassfibre front & rear bumpers and ducktail. The interior has been fitted out with Outridge's own period RS replica seats, complete with glassfibre shells, a RS carpet set and door panels, with rubber mats on the floor. The dash instruments have the dials amended to resemble those in period, including the clock and radio delete panels. A Momo Prototipo steering wheel completes the interior. LED headlight bulbs and dashlights have been fitted to aid night driving. The above creates a notable weight saving on the standard SC and enhances the handling of the 911.

The car runs on Bilstein suspension with 7s & 8s 15 inch Fuchs wheels, fitted with new Pirelli P6000 tyres to the correct period sizes 195/65 front and 215/60 rear. The brakes are non servo assisted SC calipers fitted with Carbone Lorraine RC6 pads fed by Goodrich braided hoses, with cross drilled discs on the front. A Weltmeister strut brace is fitted to the front suspension.

The engine and gearbox have recently been rebuilt and upgraded by the current owner. The 3 litre engine is fitted with Wossner 10.5:1 competition pistons, the conrods have ARP bolts and the cams are billet DC40 spec with pressure fed chain tensioners. The pistons and rods were weighed to ensure uniformity, the pistons are each 115 grams (17%) lighter than the std Porsche units. The cylinder heads have large inlet ports with 40 Weber IDA carbs on a tall 911R spec inlet manifolds, which are matched to the ports. Ignition is a Classic Retrofit programmable system, using the correct CDI spec coil and Magnecore leads. The more efficient backdated exhaust system uses genuine SSI heat exchangers and a Dansk Sports muffler. All this creates a very tractable engine that produces power from low down all the way to its current 7000 rpm limit, power is circa 245hp

The 915 gearbox has recently fitted with new bearings throughout, with the syncro rings being replaced circa 7000 miles ago. A Wevo plate has been fitted to support the main bearings and a Quaife ATB differential is also in place. Drive is provided by a Sachs Lightweight Power Clutch, fitted during the rebuild. The gearshift has been updated with a Weltmeister coupler and a Jwest RennShift gearlever mechanism with 917 style balsa knob. The gearchange is precise, smooth and crunch-free. Superpro Blue mounts are used on both the engine and gearbox.

The car was purchased in April 2014 and to help protect its bodywork, Lokari alloy wheel arch liners were fitted throughout , at that time. The car has completed 28000 miles since the backdate was carried out, when it received at total glass out respray in its original Grand Prix White. The paintwork is in good order, but does show some minor signs of road rash. The shell is solid and creak free.

The car drives well, there are no oil leaks on either the engine or 'box. The car has been kept in a heated garage and when possible driving in the rain has been avoided. The car is a great driving, sports performance example of an early 911, well capable of keeping up with more modern examples on the road.

The car is in Co Down, a 15 minute drive from Belfast City Airport
