Clutch Problems
My 73T has been sitting in the garage for a bit, but is started fairly regularly. Today I decided to move it out of the garage, but with the car running I can't get it into gear, there is a horrible crunching noise, when trying to engage the gear.
When the engine is not running I can get it into gear but not that easily.
I am its something to do with it sitting for a long time, without the gears\clutch being used.
I assume its something to do with the clutch. Any tips on what I can do ?
Thanks

Re: Clutch Problems
The clutch is stuck on, you need to start it in gear - make sure nothing is around, and drive it around a field or somewhere safe for it to warm up and disengage.
Basically you are trying to engage a gear at the moment and the clutch is not moving and engaging. Failing that, although I have never tried this method personally, jack it up so both wheels are off the ground, SAFELY! - put it in gear and start it up.
After a while hopefully the clutch will release itself.
Sometimes starting it up in gear in say reverse may just be enough to break the bond where it is stuck on - or First gear. May take about 5 or 6 attempts.

Agree, a degree of brute force will have you going.
Only happened to me once in 35 years, but this way is better than taking it all apart!

I'm looking for a pre-impact bumper 911S or other high-revving 911 to restore - please let me know if you see one.

Re: Clutch Problems
I've known a few (non porsche) car freed-up by no running engine, car in 1st and rocking the car forward/backwards against the engine compression but on level ground(!)

Re: Clutch Problems
If it's not the clutch, check linkage bushes. They wear and/or go brittle and break.
I had exactly these symptoms last year. Turned out to be the plastic cup that sits in the ball & socket joint beneath the gear stick. The cup had broken resulting in excessive play. Worth also checking the bushes in the coupler at the back of the tunnel.
Good luck

Re: Clutch Problems
Success. The car can now change gear. I put the car into gear and rocked the car, but that still did not work. So contacted my mechanic who popped round and he was a bit more forceful with putting it into gear, which worked. Took the car for a run and all good.
The next thing is the fuel gauge has stopped working and so has the right hand side front lights.
Not sure how to tackle the fuel gauge. And yes there is petrol in it
